What the hell does she mean by that? She can see the soul ties, she knows the truth.
“Ready?” Nix asks, forcing me to focus on him. I give him a nod and he starts the timer.
Nix picks up a piece of paper, tucking his hands under his armpits.
“Chicken!”
Nix shakes his head, pretending to eat something.
“KFC!”
“Yes,” he explains, picking up another piece of paper. This time he cups his hands like he’s holding onto some handlebars.
“Riding a bike!”
“Hell yeah!” He picks another piece of paper. He tilts his head to the side before getting into a deep stance, holding his arms out in front of him.
“Volleyball!”
Nix motions for me to keep going, pretending to receive a ball.
“Libero!”
“Yep!”
This time when he picks up the paper, he starts giggling. My stomach warms at the sight. “Neil Armstrong,” I guess based on his reaction.
“What the fuck?” Hazel murmurs beside me.
“That’s not fair,” Dean says, “he didn’t even do anything yet.”
“It’s silly,” I tell them, turning to look at them as Nix picks up another piece of paper. “It’s our favorite thing to use for guessing games like this.”
“See,” Hazel says, nudging my side with her elbow. “Package deal.”
My cheeks flame as I turn back towards Nix. He’s got his back to me with his arms wrapped around himself. His hands slide up and down his own back as he starts making kissing noises.
“What the fuck?”
Nix spins around, holding up his arms like he’s dancing with someone. He swings his hips back and forth and I can’t stop staring at him. My mouth is dry, my lips unable to move in order to form words.
Hazel and Dean start laughing beside me as we watch Nix make out with himself. The timer goes off and for once, I’m glad to be done with my turn.
“Well?” Nix asks, looking over at Dean and Hazel. “Do you have a guess?”
Hazel and Dean put their heads together, whispering between them. I pick up my glass of water, taking a deep drink of it. Hopefully, it’ll help cool me down after watching Nix move like that.
Hazel’s words keep playing over and over inside my head. Why the fuck would she say that to me unless she knows something that I don’t know. She’s kind and doesn’t seem like the type of person who’d tease me for my unrequited feelings. That means, she’s being earnest when she says that Nix and I belong together.
Except, I saw the soul ties. I saw that Nix and Dean belong together. There’s no ifs, ands, or buts about it. Does that mean I missed something that day?
“The horizontal tango!”
“Yeah!” Nix says, adding two points to their team’s score. He quickly switches places with Dean, sitting beside Hazel.
“You two are something else, Nix,” Hazel says, jostling Nix’s side. “It’s like you had some sort of telepathic mind melding moment or something.”
“That’s what happens when you’ve been best friends since kindergarten," Nix says proudly. “I know Kassian better than I know anyone else.”
