I laughed. “You’re too smart for your own good.”

“The mind is a dangerous weapon, love. Wield it carefully.”

“Can I cut in?” asked a voice beside me, and I jumped out of Ben’s arms. Cam looked between us, curious. “Is Bennett behaving himself?”

“No!” I shooed Ben away as he laughed. “He’s messing with my mind as usual.”

Cam hummed and took my hand. “He’s good at that, isn’t he?”

“Just keeping her on her toes,” Ben said before disappearing into the crowd.

Cam swept me onto the dance floor, gripping me closer and tighter than Ben had. “He’s a lot, I know, but he’s just looking out for you. I’d trust him with my life.”

I shook myself and smiled up into Cam’s face. His eyes twinkled, and he did the smoldering thing that made my knees weak. The night sparkled with whimsy—the people, the decor, the music—and I grew overly fond of everything around me. I wondered about the woman in the house, and why she was so afraid to step into the light.

I wanted the light.

Perhaps I was only being fanciful, but magic glistened in the air around me. Cam and I danced as lovers did, as if the song existed only in our hearts calling out to one another. I drew closer and closer, trapped in the unguarded adoration in his gaze.

“How am I doing with the wooing?” he asked in a low voice.

I smiled. “I feel properly breathless.”

“Good.” He kissed my forehead.

“Though my knickers are still firmly in place.” I winked at him.

His warm laugh filled the space between us, and I found I rather enjoyed making him laugh. The crinkles around his eyes were so attractive…

“You’re staring,” he said, still smiling.

“I like what I’m looking at.”

He hummed. “I think that’s my line, pretty girl.”

“I beat you to it. Looks like you’re first loser yet again.”

He dipped closer, lips brushing the shell of my ear. “Someday I’m going to show you what you can do with that smart mouth.”

Flames erupted across my skin as he brushed a subtle kiss on my neck.

Did he really just say that?

“That is no way to talk to a lady,” I said, far too breathily.

His grip tightened on my waist. “I think the lady might like it.”

She does. She really, really does.

I tried to make a sound of disagreement, but his scent and his voice were doing strange things to my reasoning skills.

“How are the knickers now, hmm?”

I bit my lip, trying to appear at least the tiniest bit provocative. “A little wet.”

And did I just say that?

Like a wanton, uncontrollable succubus, I was trying to seduce this man in the middle of a dance floor full of people.
