With a chuckle, he lifted his gaze to the ceiling. “Of course it is. Fairy godmothers know all.”
“Could you be serious for once?”
“No,” he drawled. “I’m not capable.”
Camden’s office door opened, and the man himself zeroed in on Bennett. “Get off her desk, Ben.”
This time, Bennett did not obey, but his sphinx-like smile appeared. “It appears our dear Shay has a coffee-gifting admirer.”
Cam barely acknowledged the drink in my hand before shooting a bored expression at Bennett. “Fascinating,” he said in a tone that hinted he didn’t find it fascinating at all.
“It’s quite good.” I lifted my cup and smiled, a pathetic attempt to catch his attention.
Wintry eyes seized mine, and something pulled behind my belly button. His mouth edged up at the corner. “Do you mean to say that it’s…great?”
Uncertain whether he was teasing or patronizing me, my smile fell. “‘Great’ is a perfectly acceptable adjective, Shepherd.”
He stepped closer. “Is it?”
I set my cup down and crossed my arms. “An exceptional one, if you ask me.”
Lazy steps brought him to my side. “It’s mid at best.”
I huffed incredulously and looked at Bennett for backup. “He’s always been like this.”
Ben pressed his lips together, attempting not to laugh while Cam’s distractingly handsome features morphed into an expression of superiority. “Always correct, you mean?”
I flung my arms about, indicating the minimal area between us. “Argumentative!”
Camden shook his head and looked at me like I’d gone mad. “I’m the argumentative one?”
With a frustrated exhale, I motioned for Bennett to intervene.
“Oh, no,” he said, hands raised. “Thou shall not insert thyself.”
“If I recall,” Cam, now far too close, continued as if Bennett didn’t exist, “you used to pick fights with me just to pass the time.”
His proximity flustered me, brought heat to my cheeks, and words spilled from my mouth heedless of propriety. “I picked fights because you’re insufferable.”
He hummed. “That’s your opinion.”
“The right opinion.” I took an exaggerated sip of my free, delicious coffee. “Mmmm. Great.”
A smile finally broke, but he directed his laugh at the floor. “You make it too easy, Honeycutt.”
My mouth opened, though I had no words. I turned to Bennett, pleading for support. He shook his head, commiserating. “You really do.”
Cam’s laughter faded, and he lifted an eyebrow at Bennett. “Get off her desk.”
“Aye, boss.” Bennett hopped to his feet.
“Weren’t you supposed to meet me in my office?”
A fiendish glint entered Bennett’s eye. “Who could resist such a tempting detour?”
A hot wave crept up my neck. “Pshh. Nahh.”
Get it together!
