“I’m being nice,” Klair said.
“You are not.”
“I could’ve said worse.”
Ravenna looked at me. “Is he really that bad?”
I stared at Caleb and he stared back. For the first time all night, he couldn’t look away.
“No.” My voice was calm. “He’s not bad.”
Klair coughed. “She loves to decorate her disasters.”
I ignored her. “He’s just… complicated.”
Ravenna nodded knowingly. “Aren’t they all?”
Klair lifted her glass. “Some more than others.”
Ravenna laughed. “What does he do?”
Klair answered for me again. “Lie. That’s his full time job... lying.”
“KL-AIR.”
“What?”
Ravenna nearly spit out her champagne. Caleb looked physically ill.
Klair shrugged. “I’m kidding.”
She absolutely was not.
“Professionally,” Ravenna clarified, still laughing.
“Oh.” Klair looked at me. “Business.”
My stomach flipped. “He owns a few.”
Caleb cleared his throat. “Anyone need another drink?”
Klair smiled. “I think you’ve had enough.”
I bit my lip so hard it hurt.
Ravenna looked between us. “You two are hilarious.”
“Thank you,” Klair said.
Then she looked at Caleb. “You’re awfully quiet.”
Ravenna rubbed his arm. “He’s exhausted.”
Klair nodded. “Poor thing. Being in two places at once will do that to you.”
My heart stopped and Caleb’s face emptied. I turned toward my sister when Ravenna frowned.
Then Klair smiled. “Businessman. Husband. All these businesses. Awards. That’s basically four jobs.”
