I stared at her.
“It was not a separation leading to divorce.” She shook her head. “It was space because I found him texting and calling another woman.”
“No.”
Ravenna smiled. “You telling me no about my marriage?”
“He left and got an apartment.”
“THIS LITTLE ASS APARTMENT? HE HAS A BIG ASS HOME!! THE LONGEST WE HAVE BEEN AWAY FROM EACH OTHER WAS FOR SIX MONTHS WHEN I WENT HOME TO TAKE CARE OF MY DAD WHO WAS SUFFERING FROM STAGE 4 CANCER.”
My chest hurt.
She shrugged like she did not give one fuck about my feelings. “Soooo, that's when he got this pitiful ass apartment.”
I couldn’t breathe. I grabbed the back of a chair and Ravenna watched me. “He told me you were still trying to emotionally prepare for divorce.”
She scoffed. “Baby, I was preparing for a baby.”
I froze. “What?”
Ravenna looked like she wanted to hurt me intentionally. “Yes, the only thing I’ve been emotionally preparing for is a baby and the process.”
My lips parted. “But—”
“No.” She nodded. “For medical reasons, I can’t carry.”
My stomach dropped again.
“So we started looking at surrogacy. We’ve been narrowing down surrogates for a while now. We coulda been done by now, but it's just hard for me to trust someone with my child.”
My knees almost gave out. “No.”
Ravenna tilted her head. “You keep saying no like that’s going to change shit.”
I stared at her. “Caleb said—”
“There you go again.” She laughed. “Caleb said.”
My chest cracked. “He said he wanted children with me.”
“I’m sure he did.”
“He said—”
“Girl.”
Her voice became almost pitying. “You’re standing in my husband’s apartment with…” Her eyes dropped to my hand.
She stopped and her eyes locked onto my ring. “Oh my God.”
I instinctively covered my hand, but it was too late.
“Is that from him?”
I said nothing.
Ravenna walked closer. “Did my husband give you a ring?”
