“It’s yours.”

I held it against my chest. “I’m not reading this shit again.”

“Okay.”

I stood and I stopped at the door. “Sydnee?”

“Yes?”

I looked down at the envelope. “Do you think she would like me?”

“I think she’d be relieved you exist. See you next week, Blair.”

I opened the door. “Maybe.”

“And Blair?”

I looked back and she smiled. “Go live.”

When I got into my car, I didn’t immediately start it. I pulled the pink envelope from my purse and held it in my lap.

I hope somebody loves her one day and she doesn’t spend the whole relationship punishing herself.

I stared at those words through fresh tears. I pulled out my phone seeing a text from Nash.

Nash: Dinner tonight?

Blair: Yes. Pick me up at 6.

Nash: Damn no 30 minute negotiation first? Therapy must’ve been good today LMAO.

Blair: LMFAO, Mind your business.

I put the phone down and looked at the envelope one last time. That woman had sat on her couch staring at a wall because she couldn’t imagine a life beyond what she’d done. She had begged the universe for me without even knowing who I would become. I owed her the life she didn’t believe we’d ever have.

BEFORE

The first text came from Janelle.

Janelle: Please call me before you get on social media.

I stared at it for maybe three seconds then opened Facebook. What the fuck else was I supposed to do after receiving a message like that? No one in the history of bad news had ever successfully warned someone not to look at something by telling them not to look at it.

My notifications were already fucked. I refreshed my page and saw one hundred friend requests, tags, and messages. People I hadn’t spoken to since high school suddenly wanted access to my page.

I backed out and went to my newsfeed. I didn’t have to scroll.

Ravenna Whitmore.

Her profile picture was still a picture of her and Caleb. Then my eyes dropped to the post beneath it. It had been shared over three hundred times.

Since apparently my husband has been living two lives for the last three years, I think it’s time everyone gets introduced to the other one.

“Oh, fuck.”
