“Are you pregnant?”
“What? No.”
“Did you kill somebody?”
“No!”
“Okay. Those are my top two emergencies.”
I exhaled. In every rehearsal, I sounded reasonable. All the things Caleb had explained to me. All the things I’d explained to myself. But sitting there with my sister waiting on the other end of the phone, there was no elegant way to say it.
“Caleb is married.”
Silence.
My stomach dropped. “Klair?”
Nothing.
“Hello?”
“I’m here.”
“Okay.”
More silence.
Then—
“What?”
“He’s married.”
“I heard you. I’m giving you an opportunity to tell me I misunderstood.”
I swallowed. “You didn’t.”
“Separated?”
“Yes.”
“Legally?”
I hesitated.
“Blair.”
“They live separately.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
“I know.”
“So no.”
“They’ve been separated for—”
“Does he have a wife?”
