Heartbreak Baby

I take his wrist and guide his palm to the spot where I felt the movement. “Right here.”

Sumner goes quiet, his thumb brushing once over my skin while we wait for the baby to do it again.

Naturally, the baby doesn’t.

I glance at Sumner. He’s still watching my stomach, waiting with the same patient focus he brings to pretty much everything.

“You know the baby probably knows you’re waiting and is doing this on purpose, right?”

His thumb brushes slowly over my skin. “If that’s true, I know exactly where the baby got it.”

I snort. “Asshole.”

Before I can defend myself, the baby kicks.

Sumner’s whole face lights up. The crease between his eyebrows disappears, and this huge smile spreads across his face as he looks down at my stomach.

I smile too because I can’t help it.

He’s felt the baby move plenty of times by now, but he still gets this adorably happy look every time he catches one of the kicks, like it’s the coolest thing that’s ever happened to him.

“There you are,” he says quietly, rubbing his thumb over the spot where the baby kicked. “Hey, kid.”

I smile at him, because the way he talks to my stomach like the baby might understand him still gets me. Then the nickname catches in my head.

“We really should figure out what we’re calling this kid once they’re not living inside me anymore.”

Sumner’s gaze lifts to mine. “You’ve been thinking about names?”

“A little.”

He gives me a look that says he doesn’t believe that for a second.

I sigh and shift deeper into the pregnancy pillow. “Fine. I’ve made lists, browsed Reddit forums, and finally narrowed it down to one for a girl and one for a boy.”

Sumner shifts a little higher against the pillows, but his hand stays where it is. “You already have both?”

“I do.”

We hadn’t even talked about it before the anatomy scan. The tech asked if we wanted to know the sex, Sumner looked at me, I looked at him, and for whatever reason we both decided we’d rather wait. So when she got to the part of the scan that could give it away, she warned us and we looked away from the monitor until she was done.

I still can’t believe neither of us has changed our minds.

He nods and settles back against the headboard. “Alright. Let’s hear them.”

For some reason, now that I have to say the first one out loud, I’m a little nervous. I’ve been rolling it around in my head long enough that I know I like it and have become attached, but that doesn’t necessarily mean Sumner won’t look at me like I just suggested naming our child Braxtynleigh or something.

“Okay. For a girl, I really like Frankie.”

He looks down at my stomach for a second while his hand stays warm against my skin. “Frankie Wells.”

I watch his face while he says it, trying to figure out what he thinks. He looks thoughtful more than anything, which is way better than horrified or disgusted.

“Well?” I ask when he doesn’t say anything else.

Sumner looks back at me and smiles. “I like it.”

I laugh because I didn’t realize how badly I wanted him to like it until he did. “You do?”
