“Feel something,” she repeated, quieter. “Nothing between us requires feelings.”
I scrubbed a hand down my face, already regretting everything I’d said. “Just, forget it. It’s not – this isn’t…”
“No,” she said, stepping closer before I could turn away completely. “Don’t do that.”
“Don’t do what?”
“Say something like that and then walk away and pretend as if none of this happened.” Her glare burned into mine. “You’ve been doing that since I got here.”
I laughed, disbelieving. “And you haven’t?”
Her shoulders tense up. “That’s different, Wyatt.”
“Explain to me how the fuck that’s different.” I challenge her.
Then she huffed out a breath, shaking her head. “You’re unbelievable.”
“And you showed up in that outfit like you weren’t trying to start something?” I shot back before I could stop myself. Not the comment to make.
Her eyes widened. “Excuse me?”
“I didn’t stutter.”
“Oh my god,” she scoffed, crossing her arms. “So now this is my fault? Because I look good?”
“I didn’t say that.”
“You most certainly implied it.”
“That’s the problem,” I replied. Her gaze dropped slightly before it met my eyes again.
We were too close for comfort, but none of us made the move to back up.
“We probably shouldn’t be standing this close,” she murmured.
“Probably not.”
“Wy, I –”
“Wyatt!” Liam’s voice cut through everything. “There are you man, coach is –”
He stopped mid-sentence and a stupid smirk grew on his lips.
Eliana stepped back immediately, as if she had just remembered where we were and who we were with.
Right.
I clear my throat. “What?” I asked.
Liam blinked, that smirk still on his face. “Coach was looking for you.”
I nodded. “Yeah,” I muttered. “I’ll be there.”
Liam simply nods before turning back toward the crowd.
Eliana hugged her arms around herself. “You should go.”
“Yeah.”
