‘What?’

‘When in confusion about whether or not to do something or whether or not to say something, just do it. Say what has to be said. Life gets a lot easier that way. I’ve given you such important gyaan about life. You’ll benefit greatly from it.’

‘Oh, I never thought of it that way, yaar.’

‘If girls and boys could think this way then 85 per cent of the guys wouldn’t tell girls that they loved them after their marriages were fixed.’

‘Out of 100 per cent, 10 per cent are useless, 90 per cent remain. And 85 per cent of them tell the girls about loving them after the girls’ marriage is fixed. What about the 5 per cent left, madam?’

‘Those 5 per cent guys are the not-so-bad ones. Go to work now. You’ll get late and out of shyness won’t even admit that you were late because of me.’

‘I am one of those 10 per cent useless guys, I guess.’

‘All guys are useless; some before marriage, some after it. Anyway, we’ll see about that in the evening.’

‘Okay, then. Ta-ta!’

‘Ta-ta! Let’s go for coffee in the evening.’

‘All right. Meet me at seven at the coffee house near my office.’

On his way to work, Chandar didn’t feel like he was going to work from Flat Number 1102 in G wing. His ‘flat’ had become ‘home’.

A for A Lot Can Happen over Golgappe

Sudha had this habit of changing her plans without any prior intimation. If prodded, she would snap, ‘Life doesn’t chug along according to a timetable.’

She changed the evening coffee-house plan to a golgappe plan instead.

‘You were saying you wanted to go to the coffee house. So why golgappe suddenly?’

‘Just a mood thing. I feel like having golgappe the moment I see them; I just can’t resist. Is there any problem with eating golgappe?’

‘No, no problem as such. I just don’t like them that much. They always get stuck in the throat.’

‘Then you don’t know how to eat them properly.’

‘Now who can go wrong with golgappe?’

‘Just like you’ve been going wrong. You have to eat it whole in one go. Anyway, let it be. It’s obvious that you have never had a girlfriend.’

‘Now pray tell me: What is the connection between eating golgappe and having a girlfriend?’

‘There is. You won’t understand. If you had gone out with her for golgappe, you’d have figured out the right way to eat them too. Anyway, I’m done; let’s go to the coffee house.’

‘Coffee after golgappe?’

‘Why not? Is there a law against drinking coffee after eating golgappe?’

‘Arré, it might be harmful, na.’

‘No, it won’t be. Let’s go, I wanted to talk as well.’

‘Talk about what?’

‘Let’s get to the coffee house first?’

‘We can talk at home as well. I don’t feel like going to the coffee house.’
