She Walks with Broken Things

It was rage.

“Cloves.”

Every muscle in my body went still.

“Cloves.”

A shudder tore free as she arched her back once more hard enough to tear herself from her sleep. But it didn’t, did it? No, the darkness held her under. A broken sound ripped from her throat. Not just fear this time… no. This was what terror sounded like. Pure terror.

I moved before I knew. My hand finding her shoulder. “Nyssa.”

Another violent jerk. Nails dragged along the sheets before clenching. I dropped my hand from her shoulder. Finger light, running along her arms. God she was tense. Corded tendons as she twisted the sheet in her grip and yanked so hard I heard fabric tear.

“No.”

The word came out small.

Childlike.

God.

“No, please.”

My stomach dropped.

She wasn’t here anymore.

She wasn’t in my bed.

She was back there.

“Rain… rain.”

Rain? I narrowed in. Constructing the image in my mind.

“Please, it’s raining. It’s raining. It’s—” She froze. “Noooo… Andrea.”

Andrea?

“Sophie. Please no. Please not Sophie.”

My breath froze.

Raining.

Cloves.

Andrea.

Sophie.

I started building it in my head. Where the fuck was she?

She thrashed her head from side to side.

Jesus fucking Christ.

I closed my eyes. This wasn’t a fucking report anymore, was it?
