She Walks with Broken Things

“Got it.” One of men nodded and disappeared.

Her gaze moved to the men. Then… back to me.

I felt it. The question in her eyes. Who are you?

Rafe never waited. “The footage of the east wing. That’s where we’ll find them.”

Nobody hesitated. Nobody questioned. They simply moved.

Years of training turned into words of instinct.

My focus never left Nyssa.

“Rafe.”

“Yeah?”

“Nobody leaves this house.”

“Done.”

“If he comes back…” Rafe held my stare. “…he doesn’t leave.”

Silence settled over the room. Nobody flinched. Nobody looked surprised. They simply accepted the order and moved.

I reached for Nyssa’s hand. “Come.”

She didn’t argue. She simply let me lead her from the room. Boots thundered behind us as the team spread throughout the house. Ghost disappeared deeper into the east wing. Brick was checking the exterior doors and windows. Falcon’s steps faded overheard. Knox was already in the security room pulling up every camera.

Wherever this dead man touched.

We’d find it.

I ignored it all.

Right now there was only her.

“Wait here.” I released her hand and stepped through the doorway of her bedroom. My eyes swept the room. Window. Open. Curtains. Closet. Bathroom. Bed. Underneath. Empty.

I crossed to the closet and stepped inside. Nothing. Same as the bathroom. The shower stall empty. So was the bath. I walked back out. My gaze settled on the bedside drawer. Empty.

The missing knife sat heavier than any weapon I’d ever carried. Only then did I return to her.

“Come in.”

I stepped aside, watching her every movement, then closed the door behind her. She was still shaking. Her fists clenched tight. I moved close, kept my movements slow and gently brushed her hair back.

Just one touch.

She shivered and stepped into me.

My arms went around her instantly, drawing her against my chest. “That’s it… come back to me.”

Fisted hands went around my waist. Then slowly her fingers unfurled, clutching my shirt instead. I lowered my head. Buried my face against her hair. The scent of her shampoo filled my lungs.

God…

She was here.
