Rafe’s jaw tightened. “Alaric.”
“Do it.”
“She’s going to hate you.”
My gaze lifted toward the window.
Her window.
Light spilled through the curtains. A shadow moved behind them.
Nyssa.
Alive.
Here.
Where I knew where she was.
“Then she hates me.”
The words hollowed me out.
“She can hate me alive.”

NYSSA
Ghost followed me into the kitchen. He tried not to make it obvious and that only made it worse. I opened the refrigerator. He stopped in the hallway. I reached for water. He waited. I closed the refrigerator. He moved when I moved.
Three steps behind.
Always three.
I stopped and so did he. I turned. Ghost stared back at me. Neither of us spoke. He looked uncomfortable. Good. So was I.
I walked toward the library and he followed. Past the sitting room. Followed. Toward the front door. his steps changed. Faster. I reached for the handle.
“Nyssa.”
I stopped.
First word he’d spoken since I’d come out of my room.
I looked at him. “What?”
His jaw tightened. “I can’t let you do that.”
For several seconds, I genuinely didn’t understand. Then I looked at my hand. The door. Back at him. “You can’t let me?”
“Orders.”
Of course.
“Whose?”
He didn’t answer.
