“Tell me what you know.”
“Killian didn’t come home. Tracked his last location to a set of offices before the signal disappeared.”
“Send it to me.”
“You don’t want to be involved with this.”
Nyssa’s trembling breaths still echoed in my head.
“I already am… and London. No one hears about this but me.”
Silence.
“Why do you think I haven’t answered any one else’s call?”
I breathed. “Then, I’ll meet you there.”
“Are you coming as you… or the Revenant?”
I closed my eyes. Something older shifted awake inside me. “I’ll let you know.”
The city sounded wrong to me now. Engines and wet streets. Radios hissed softly somewhere beyond the glass while sirens bled through the rain-soaked streets. I tried to block it all out as Rafe drove through the heartbeat of this place and out the other side. But the moment I turned away from the throb of it all she was there.
Nyssa.
Her trembling breaths.
Her scent of fear.
The space in the knife block.
The hunger settled deeper instead of fading.
Coming alive in the intoxicating wake of her.
The car turned down busy streets. Careful. Controlled.
Rafe stayed silent in front of me. No careful probing. No outright demands. He drove in silence, until even that became too loud.
“You think it’s connected?”
I stared into the emptiness as the old audio tapes replayed in my head. The killings. The attacks. The Sons and the Daughters. “Everything’s connected.”
The noise of the city faded.
Still she stuck in my head.
Her trembling words on repeat.
I was scared.
“We’re here.”
I tore away from the memory as the car slowed.
“London’s in his car waiting.”
One nod. That’s all I gave. Rafe pulled up, switched off the engine and climbed out.
