He doesn’t want me to touch him.
He doesn’t want to come.
He got what he wanted.
And when I look at him in the mirror, he’s smiling softly at me.
“Are you all right?” he whispers in my ear.
“Are you?” I ask, slotting my fingers between his.
He nods and kisses my neck.
“You didn’t let me…” I meet his eyes and blush. The potion must be wearing off because suddenly I’m very aware of how naked I am and how many mirrors are in this place. I move my other hand to his thigh and squeeze it gently. “You didn’t fuck me.”
Kim combs his finers through his thick curly hair and shakes his head. “Another time,” he says. “Not here. Like this.”
“You don’t think we should have…?” The blush creeps down my throat and spreads across my chest.
“Oh no, this was perfect.” He grins at me. “You needed this. And I needed to see it. It’s just not the right time to go all the way.”
There it is again… the look in his eyes that reminds me of Sam.
I want to ask him, “Are you a virgin, Kim?”
But I can’t. Not here. Not when she’s watching us.
She’s coming for you now, Little Star. Kole’s voice trickles through me and it occurs to me that I almost forgot he was there.
I’m about to ask him if he’s angry with us but before I get the chance, there’s the sound of a door being pulled open and a rush of cold air enters the room.
Kim jumps to his feet and helps me to mine, then positions himself in front of me.
Very gallant of him, but with this many mirrors, it’s pretty pointless.
A slow, loud clapping sound echoes through the room.
From one of the corridors – the one Kim came from – a figure appears. It’s the blond college boy Zephyra fucked. He’s wide-eyed and has black veins trickling down his cheeks. Clearly, his addiction took hold fast.
He looks us up and down, and a slow crazy smile spreads across his lips. “What a show,” he says, his voice lilting like something from a British period TV drama. “I’d like to see more.”
Kim, despite being naked, is doing a good job of looking menacing as hell. His stance widens and his fists clench at his sides. Across his back, his muscles twitch.
“I’d like to see what’s inside the Fire Bird.” The student moves closer.
I search for Kole’s voice. But if he’s still watching, he’s not able to talk to me.
Evan licks his fangs. His snarl is like a cross between a hellhound and a tiger. Then he thrusts his elbow into a nearby mirror. The sound it makes causes me to wince as shards of glass fall to the floor.
Evan stoops and picks one up, his movement so fast I barely have time to process it.
Kim tries to copy him, but Evan grabs his shoulders and tosses him aside as if he weighs nothing.
Kim smashes into the wall, and another two mirrors break.
I turn and try to run, but there’s no way I can outpace the vamp without using my powers and, although I’m pretty sure I could control them now, I’m not willing to let him see that’s the case.
So, I let him catch me.
