“Lucien, I—” He glances at the pool feed on my computer screen.
“There’s time for that later.” I shake my head. “I’m aware of what happened. It’s not an issue.”
Kim opens his mouth to speak, then closes it.
“I called for your help because werewolves are attacking a campsite on the edge of the city. Humans are involved so I have to deal with it.”
Kim seems to shake off the fact that we were talking about Luna and harden into work-mode. His brows knot together into a frown. “You’re sure you need to go, Lucien? Nix was with a bunch of wolves when I saw him. This feels like a trap—”
“It could be. But Renfield isn’t capable alone, and I trust you to look after Luna while I’m gone.” I meet his eyes.
Kim nods, rubs his chin, then takes his glasses from his pocket and puts them on. “With my life,” he says.
“Then I will see you soon.” I hesitate, then put my hand on his shoulder. We’ve never exchanged physical contact before. Not even a handshake. Kim glances at my fingers and a kind of prickling heat seems to pass between us. I meet his eyes, and can’t help allowing a vicious smile to tweak my lips.
But now is definitely not the time for that.
Kim steps back, blushing a little. I pause in the doorway. “Kim?”
“Mmm?”
I stay with my back to him as I say, “Best wait until I’m home before fucking Luna again. Don’t want you too distracted while you’re in charge of her safety.”

Luna
I’m lying on the sofa, watching Kim scroll between security feeds on the iPad. His glasses have slipped down his nose and he keeps pushing them back up with his index finger. Every time he does it, I find myself smiling.
But when I try to smile at him, he looks away.
“Are you feeling awkward?” I ask, trying to catch his eyes.
Kim looks up. “Awkward?”
“About earlier?”
He exhales slowly and shakes his head, then moves to take my hand. “No. I’m sorry. Lucien gave me some very specific instructions before he left, which I’m trying to stick to.”
“Instructions?”
“He asked me not to…” Kim laughs, and his eyes connect with mine in a way that makes me feel hungry for him to touch me. “He asked me not to fuck you while he’s gone because he needs you kept safe and doesn’t want me distracted.”
I let out a loud chuckle. “So, not because he’s jealous?”
Kim quirks an eyebrow at me. “Honestly? No. He seemed into it.”
“Told you so.”
He shuffles uncomfortably. Like he’s turned on and trying not to be.
“Do you think he’s okay?” I ask, pulling the blanket from the back of the sofa and wrapping it around my shoulders. “It feels strange that he left.”
Kim clicks his tongue. “He’ll be fine. He’s handled worse than a bunch of FHB-jacked werewolves.”
I nod, but I can’t shake the uneasiness that’s crawling beneath.
Something just doesn’t feel right…
