“Go ahead, Vance.”
The tension sparks between them again, but it no longer burns. Victoria lowers her voice.
“We just have to remember not to lose sight of our plans.”
“Don’t worry, we’ll do it together,” Harper declares.
The two of them head out to the photo set. There, the magazine’s usual hustle and bustle is in full swing. Julian reviews some stills on the giant screen while Solange instructs an assistant on how to position a clutch.
“It can’t just be left lying there like that,” Solange protests, waving her hands. “It has to convey status, desire, urgency.”
The assistant shyly repositions the bag.
Harper laughs as she approaches. Solange turns around instantly.
“You’re finally coming out of the conclave. Did you survive Eleanor?”
Julian peeks out from behind the monitor.
“Judging by the satisfied looks on your faces, I’d say people liked your work.”
Victoria sets her dossier down on the desk.
“And no objections.”
Julian dramatically clutches his chest. Solange puts down the outfits and stands in front of them, her eyes narrowed.
“What else did Eleanor tell you? I know there’s more to it.”
“We’re going to Chicago,” Victoria announces.
“To the New Voices Gala?” Solange exclaims, her eyes widening.
“That’s right,” Harper says, nodding.
“I’ve been begging to go to that event for two years!” Solange complains, pointing to her chest.
Solange crosses her arms, studying Victoria’s and Harper’s posture.
“Hmm… Chicago,” the stylist murmurs mischievously. “A business trip. Away from the office. At a luxury hotel…”
Victoria looks at her with an executive’s cold detachment.
“It’s a talent recruitment mission, Solange. Nothing more.”
“Sure, sure.” Solange smiles from ear to ear. “I’m sure you’ll spend your nights poring over spreadsheets.”
Julian stifles a laugh behind the monitor.
“I feel exactly the same way.”
“No one asked for your opinion, Julian,” Harper and Victoria say in unison.
The two assistants fall silent for a second. Solange lets out a triumphant laugh.
“It’s fantastic when you two talk at the same time,” Solange teases. “You’re as in sync as a couple who’ve been married for fifty years.”
Harper rolls her eyes, though she can’t help but smile.
