Sprawled in front of me, he stared out at the field, but I felt his disengagement crawl over my skin as he spoke. “Are you going to join me? Because, if not, I would rather you leave.”
I smirked. “Wow, felt the warmth in that one.”
His gaze locked onto mine. Intense, yet unreadable. “You really shouldn’t be out here by yourself,” he warned.
Typical.
“I can take care of myself.”
The stranger didn’t reply, but followed my movements as I climbed the bleachers, sitting in the same spot I always did-two paces away from him. Letting out a sigh, I placed the four pack of colas between us wrestling one from its packaging.
I extended one to my new acquaintance. “Want one?”
His eyes dropped to the bottle in my hand, pausing as if my offer was something to be seriously contemplated.
I reached further. “Lid’s still on. Didn’t get the chance to spike it with cyanide.”
He gave me a weird look, taking it from my grasp. “Thanks,” he mumbled.
We settled into a comfortable silence, staring out at the vacant space before us.
I leaned against the level behind me, and the timber dug into my back. “Why are men such assholes?” I mused.
He looked sideways at me, his glare hardening. “Are you putting me in a box with some douche who just broke your heart?”
I stared at him pointedly. “He broke up with me on my birthday,” I said, not bothering to hide my bitter tone. “Loser.”
“Clearly.” The stranger’s gaze held mine for a fraction of a second before turning back to the field. “He probably didn’t deserve you, anyway.”
And Mr. Mysterious has something decent to say after all.
I took a drink of my cola, relishing the flavor in my mouth. “I guess he didn’t see it that way.” I bent to tighten the lace on my boot, glancing back at him. “What are you doing out here? You’re old. Shouldn’t you have your slippers on by now?”
The corner of his mouth peaked, and he released a chuckle so low that, if it wasn’t for the rise and fall of his shoulders, I would have missed it.
“I’m twenty-five. I’d like to think I’m in my prime.”
Older than me by five years.
I took another drink, and the tang on my tongue lingered like a stolen kiss. “Yeah, you’re ancient.”
He lifted a brow. “Maybe so, but I could show you a thing or two.” His brown eyes humored me for a moment before he continued. “If you wanted to forget him for a few minutes of your life, that is.”
I laughed, nearly choking on my drink after swallowing much faster than intended.
Did he just offer to fuck me?
Wow. That was one way to distract a girl from heartbreak.
I smiled behind the neck of my bottle. “A few minutes?”
His head tilted to the side. “I mean, I could push it out to ten.”
He smiled, and I got the feeling it surprised him as much as it did me. He was out here on his own for a reason. Maybe he had his own demons he was battling.
For his benefit, I played along.
“Oh yeah? And what do I get out of these ten minutes you speak of?”
