From Beneath the Moon

“They are pretty loud out there,” Soren says, gesturing at the ceiling. She’s a first-year on the team and fellow Front. Standing a little shorter than my shoulder, she is on the smaller side for a Front, but her speed and agility were undeniable at tryouts. Her long, dark hair is pulled into a slick pony. Her tryout was so strong she was my first draft pick, despite her being a first-year at the Watch. Plus, having my other Front as a Sun’cher is a part of my greater strategy.

Pollom and his team have no idea what’s about to hit them today.

“The first game of the season is always like this,” Wyatt says from my side. As a fellow third-year Moon’cher, he not only remembers Solarball but played as a first-year, except this time, he’s returning as a Back. His giant frame casts shadows along the wall that is almost as daunting as the black-out tattoo filling one arm—the only differentiator from his twin, Riot.

Speaking of, Riot slams his foot down on the bench, lacing up his boots. “And we better win because I want to get laid.”

“Ew, Riot.” Soren adjusts her silver shoulder guards.

“You cannot dispute that our attractiveness on the field will, nine times out of ten, result in a good fuck,” I say and spin, showing off my tight deep purple Solarball suit, knowing very well the effect my ass has in these leathers and how I may or may not hope that a certain feisty brunette notices it. Mid spin, the point from my silver shoulder armor lodges into the stone wall. I have to swing my hips forcibly before it dislodges.

“Warming up the humps, nice!” Riot slams his massive shoulder into my side.

“I wasn’t—never mind.” Don’t want to ruin his good mood before the game starts. “Alright everyone, gather around.”

Riot and Wyatt stand to my left. Soren joins on my right. Just waiting for—

“I’M HERE, BITCHES!” Kauri, our Wildcard and my second round pick after Soren, saunters into our private locker room through the silver streamers that separate our space from the interior communal area in the middle.

“You're late,” I scold. “You better have what I hope you have.”

“Oh, hush Leaf.” Kauri pulls a large bag from behind her lithe form. We had been teammates on the Forest Team last year, and she was always the first to practice. It’s so out of her character to be late. Loud, yes. But late? Never. The grin on her wide mouth is contagious as she unveils the mystery contents of her bag.

Soren spins in delight. “Is that… energy refuelant?” Her long black pony tail whips me in the mouth.

I pick at the strand of hair that somehow nestled its way into my front teeth.

“Yes!” Kauri jumps up and down in response then quickly places a bottle in each of our lockers. “We can chug these during halftime to refuel our energy stores.”

“I think I love you,” Wyatt says.

“Me too,” Riot adds.

“Me three,” Soren joins in.

They all look at their Captain, me, with sizzling energy that only pre-game jitters can achieve.

I sigh. I fucking love this team. “Me four.”

Wyatt and Riot bark like a couple of caged dogs, Kauri hollers, and Soren squeals.

I hook my arms around my teammates and huddle them close. “We’ve spent a month preparing for this day. The first game of the season is always a little overwhelming, but it’s nothing you haven’t done before. Kauri and I were in the Summit. Riot and Wyatt played as first-stones. It’s only you, Soren, where this is a first.”

Soren runs a hand across her high, slick pony. “What? Like I should be scared or something?” Confidence oozes out of every pore of her body.

“That’s the energy we need, Sor, keep that out on the field, okay?”

“Yes, Cap.”

I take a deep breath. “WHO ARE WE?”

“Legendary!” they yell back, and I feel our heartbeats aligning on the mission ahead.

“WHO ARE WE?”

“LEGENDARY!”

“WHO ARE WEEEEE?”
