Oh, now I understand.
I didn’t pay much attention to what my dragon was saying because River was babbling and asking what would the girls’ beasts look like compared to mine and when would they meet them.
“Three little girls are hard enough to keep up with. How am I going to manage them plus three female dragons?”
There’s a reason his scent is different.
My dragon was also babbling as River walked around him, admiring the purple, red, and silver scales.
Omegas’ scents change when they’re pregnant.
The word pregnant got my attention. Pregnant?
Yes, you know…
I didn’t need a biology lesson.
It’s not just River anymore. He’s not alone.
I sat still inside him. River’s scent lingered in the air, and I was glad he couldn’t see me. I’d have keeled over if I’d had my skin and two legs. Being inside my beast gave me time to compose myself.
Gods, he was pregnant. But I hadn’t picked up on it in the house. I was so excited by the change in our status that I’d ignored what was now so obvious.
We’ll have another dragon in the house.
I rubbed my brow because while my mate being pregnant was the best news, he wasn’t marked and the future was uncertain. A baby meant being settled, and River had only agreed to stay yesterday. How was I going to tell him he was pregnant?
Maybe wait until he finds out.
My dragon was smart, but he wasn’t well-versed in human emotions. That’s not a good idea. I couldn’t withhold life-changing information from my mate.
I took my skin and got dressed and River threw his arms around my neck.
“As long as I live that will be the coolest thing I’ve ever seen.”
Wait until he has a baby dragon shifter, my beast murmured. He might change his mind on what’s number one.
“Glad you liked it.”
River danced on the grass, turning around and around until he put a hand to his head. He swayed and stumbled, and I caught him before he fell, thanks to my shifter reflexes.
“That was strange. I don’t normally get dizzy.”
“Seeing a dragon for the first time will probably do that to a human.”
We wandered back to the house hand in hand, but I looked up at a tapping coming from the second floor. The girls were awake and waving. I nudged River, and he waved back and blew kisses.
My beast interrupted my thoughts, asking if River might be carrying triplets.
Oh dear gods. I adored my girls and wouldn’t change anything about my life, but I wasn’t prepared for three more babies.
Calm down. My dragon drew in a breath. I can only scent one, not three babies.
Thank goodness.
“You’re subdued.” River headed to the pantry. “Is that a result of a shift?”
“Mmmm.” I opened my mouth. This was the moment to tell him and he’d handed it to me. But the words wouldn’t come. “Sorry about the celebration. Rain check?”
