Silence… complete fucking silence.
Perfect.
Even the dead woman stops laughing.
I close my eyes.
“Well.” Rhett makes a strangled sound.
I open one eye.
He’s trying not to laugh.
“Do it and I’ll kill you.”
He turns away. His shoulders shake.
“Fuck you.”
“Sorry.”
“You’re not.”
“No.”
I look at Ezra. His face is stone. But underneath… something else. I saw it in the house and I see it now. He hates that I touched Malakai. Not because he thinks Malakai hurt me. Because Malakai got there first.
Interesting.
Malakai notices too.
Because apparently the four of us have become emotionally exhausting in record time.
The dead woman speaks. “Sower.”
Ezra freezes and everything changes.
She looks at him and her expression softens. “Oh.”
One word.
But it contains centuries.
Ezra goes pale.
I look between them. “You know her.”
He doesn’t answer.
“Ezra.”
The woman smiles. Not the terrible smile from before.
A real one. Or something close to it.
“You still look the same.”
Ezra’s face breaks… barely. But I see it. “Don’t.”
