Thump. Thump. Thump.
My head turns toward her.
She notices. “What?”
I don’t answer.
Thump. Thump. A little faster.
“What?”
“I can hear you.”
Her brow furrows. “I’m standing six feet away.”
“No.” I tap my chest. “Your heart.”
Everything goes quiet.
Sage stares at me. “That’s creepy.”
“Yes.”
“Can you stop?”
I concentrate. “No.”
“Creepier.”
Her heart accelerates. I hear every beat. Then I realize something far worse. I heard it in the house too. I simply didn’t understand what it was. I knew where she stood without seeing her. Knew when she moved. Knew when her pulse changed. The Reaper knows where his Bride is. Always.
“Rhett.” Ezra recognizes my expression.
“What?”
“I don’t think she can hide from me.”
Sage’s eyebrows shoot up. “Excuse me?”
Malakai understands first. “The Reaper finds.”
The whistle answers from the field.
Sage looks toward it then at me. “The Hunt isn’t over.”
“No.”
Ezra immediately says, “We’re not finding out.”
I almost laugh. “You really believe you can keep refusing every rite?”
“Yes.”
“How’s that working?”
His glare could strip paint.
Sage steps between us. “Could we maybe not piss off the immortal murder farm?”
