His fingers twitch.
That tiny movement hurts worse than if he’d screamed.
Because he’s still in there.
Still conscious.
Still fucking suffering.
And when his head finally begins to lift, I realize the Harvest hasn’t kept him alive so I can save him.
It kept him alive so I can watch.
My scream rips out of me. “EZRA!”
His head lifts. Black eyes.
The Harvest speaks through him. SOWER.
I run toward the fire but Rhett grabs me. “No!”
“LET GO!”
“You can’t cross that!”
“WATCH ME!”
I rip free.
Malakai catches my other arm. “Sage.”
“GET OFF ME!”
“SAGE!”
Ezra jerks violently against the roots, fighting hard enough that the ones around his chest pull tighter.
His head snaps up.
Black consumes his eyes.
Then brown.
Black again.
Brown.
The Harvest is fighting him for control, and for one terrifying second, I don’t know which one is going to win.
Then his gaze locks onto mine.
The black recedes.
Brown holds.
Ezra.
He sees me.
