Rhett and I both look at each other.
He shrugs.
Not fucking helping asshole.
Finally, Malakai releases the scarecrow’s hand then kneels placing his palm flat against the ground.
The soil shifts…barely but I see it.
Rhett stops smiling.
“Malakai.” I warn.
He closes his eyes then sinks his fingers into the dirt. Not because he pushes but because the Earth opens around them.
My stomach turns.
“Kai.” His name comes out softer this time.
His eyes open slowly, and when he looks at me, there’s something in them I haven’t seen in a very long time.
Wonder. And beneath it… fear.
“The Earth recognized her.”
Fuck.
I knew it was coming. Knew it the second I felt that vibration beneath my boots. Still, hearing him say it makes something cold settle behind my ribs. It’s the one thing I’ve spent more than two centuries making sure I’d never hear again.
“No.”
He rises slowly, dirt clinging beneath his fingernails and staining palms. “You felt it.”
“I felt something.”
“You felt her.”
”Don’t call it that.”
His brow furrows. “What would you prefer I call it?”
”A coincidence.”
A sharp sound comes from Rhett and I turn my glare on him.
He lifts both hands. “Sorry.” He says.
He isn’t.
“Do you think this is funny?”
“No.” his hands fall, and for once, the grin doesn’t return. “I think you’re fucking terrified.”
My jaw locks.
Rhett holds my stare for another second before glancing toward Kai. “And I think he is too.”
That gets my attention.
