I know the exact moment Sage becomes aware of how little space remains between us. Her breathing changes, just slightly, and her gaze drops to my mouth before snapping back to my eyes.

I notice.

She knows I notice.

Instead of backing away, she lifts her chin in defiance.

Interesting.

Ezra steps between us before I can decide what to do with that. “Go find your friends.”

Whatever warmth had been lingering in her expression disappears. “Stop ordering me around.”

“I’m trying to keep you safe.”

“From what?”

He says nothing… again.

She stares at him, waiting, but when it becomes obvious he has no intention of answering, frustration takes over.

“For fuck’s sake.” She throws her hands up. “You three are acting like I’m about to get murdered by a pumpkin.”

Rhett glances at me. I look at Ezra.

Sage catches the entire exchange and her eyes widen. “Oh my God.”

“No,” Ezra says immediately.

She turns on him. “What?”

“Nothing.”

“You all just did the thing.”

Ezra’s brow furrows. “What thing?”

“The creepy synchronized eye-contact thing.”

A grin spreads across Rhett’s face. “We’ve had practice.”

She looks between the three of us. “How long have you known each other?”

“Too long,” Ezra mutters.

“Two hundred and forty-one years,” I tell her.

Silence falls over us.

Ezra slowly turns his head in my direction.

Rhett looks fucking delighted while Sage just stares at me, so I stare back. Then she breaks.

A laugh bursts out of her so suddenly she doubles over, one hand braced against her stomach. “Oh my fucking God.”

Rhett joins her, apparently deciding there’s no point pretending anymore.

Ezra looks at me like he’s considering whether two hundred and forty-one years of friendship is enough reason not to murder me.
