“Stop answering her.”

“She asked.”

“She doesn’t need to know.”

Sage steps around him, irritation flashing across her face. “I’m standing right fucking here.”

Before Ezra can respond, the Earth pulses under us.

Her breath catches.

This time, there’s no question whether she felt it.

Her eyes find mine. “You felt that.”

It isn’t a question.

“Yes.”

“What is it?”

“Generators.” Ezra answers before I can.

Sage slowly turns toward him. “You are terrible at lying.”

Rhett nods beside me. “He really is.”

“Shut up.”

Another pulse rolls through the ground, deeper this time.

Sage’s attention drops to her feet, and I watch the confusion on her face give way to something else as she looks around.

When she looks back at us, the humor is gone. “Why isn’t anyone else noticing?”

I move toward her instinctively, but Ezra’s hand closes around my shoulder.

“Don’t.”

I look down at his hand, then back at him.

He releases me.

Sage catches every second of it. Her gaze moves between the three of us, suspicion sharpening into something dangerously close to fear. “What aren’t you telling me?”

Everything.

The dirt beneath her boots crack open, barely wider than a fingernail, and something green pushes its way through the packed earth.

A tiny shoot unfurls between her feet.

Fresh. Alive. Impossible.

Sage crouches. “What the hell?”

Ezra moves toward it.
