“Fine. Run it,” I say. “But I'm not pretending this is okay.”

Grim nods. “I'll have Lock get the sample to our contact. He can arrange the testing.”

I don't like the decision any better now that it's made.

Madison is curled on the couch when I return.

She's awake, watching the door.

“Good news?” she asks.

“Depends on your definition.”

“That bad, huh?”

I sit in the armchair opposite her.

“We found something at my cabin.”

Her teasing expression disappears.

“What?”

“A device hidden inside the house. It released something into the air. That's what made you sick.”

She goes very still.

“On purpose?”

“Yeah.”

“Who put it there?”

“We don't know yet.”

“Was it meant for me?”

“I don't think so.”

She stares at me.

“Then somebody tried to kill you.”

I don't answer.

“Jesus, Torch.”

“Sweetheart, listen.”

“No. I was inside that house. I deserve to know what's happening.”

“You're right.”

She blinks.

“I'm sorry. What?”

“You heard me.”
