The Duke who Chose her

Her maid stood beside it with admiring eyes, holding her hands tightly before her apron. "His Grace's valet delivered it personally, Your Grace, with strict instructions that no one was to unwrap it until you returned."

Helena stepped forward, her fingers trembling with happy anticipation. A soft gasp escaped her lips as the flickering candlelight caught the exquisite fabric resting within the cedar chest.

It was a gown of the most magnificent ivory silk — a deep, creamy ivory that shimmered like liquid pearls under the warm light. Down the sweeping length of the fluid skirt and along the waistline ran delicate silver embroidery, catching the firelight in dazzling flashes. The cut featured modest puff sleeves and a low square neckline that framed her collarbones without the need for excessive flounces, heavy lace, or ostentatious ornament.

When Helena descended the staircase and stepped into the main drawing room, George stood near the mantelpiece, a crystal glass of amber sherry resting between his fingers. He turned at the soft rustle of silk against the floorboards, eyes sweeping toward the doorway.

The moment his gaze landed upon her, his breath paused visibly. It took extreme focus to keep the glass firmly between his fingers, as it froze midway to his lips.

"You look…" George began, his voice like a soft song but words failed him completely. He stopped, shaking his head slightly as if trying to clear his mind of the overwhelming sight before him.

Helena smiled gently, holding the folds of her skirt as she bowed, her eyes dancing with playful warmth.

"Speechless, Your Grace?" Helena asked softly.

George set his sherry glass down upon the mantelpiece, taking a step forward, eyes burning with passion.

"I was attempting to remain a gentleman." he confessed.

"How noble of you." Helena replied teasingly, tilting her head with a soft, melodic laugh. "Though I assure you, Your Grace, chivalry is entirely unnecessary when an unfinished match awaits us."

"You are a delightfully cruel woman, Helena," George whispered, though the loving smile that broke across his face contradicted his words entirely. He reached out, gently taking her hand and lifting her fingers to his lips, pressing a warm kiss that sent a thrill straight to her toes. "Very well. If I must suffer defeat at your hands, let it be done upon the field of honor."

They seated themselves at the chess table, the hand-carved pieces gleaming beneath the warm light. The atmosphere between them, once filled with tense hostility during their earlier matches, was now thick with rich intimacy.

George reached out, advancing his king's pawn two squares forward; his traditional opening move.

"A standard attack?" Helena mused, leaning forward slightly. She reached out without hesitation, advancing her queen's bishop pawn to launch the Sicilian Defense.

George's eyes flickered with surprise, an appreciative grin spreading across his lips. "Ah, an aggressive defense. Trying to control the center from the flank, I see. A bold move but easily countered."

With ease, George deployed his king's knight forward to threaten her central squares. "You always seek to protect your pieces. It is your kind nature—you dislike sacrificing anything."

"Do not mistake patience for weakness, Your Grace," Helena replied smoothly, bypassing her standard defensive setup entirely. Instead, she brought her Queen's Knight forward into an unexpected, exposed square, offering a pawn sacrifice to open a direct lane toward his king side.

Now, how do you plan to counter me, my der husband?

George paused, his hand hovering over his bishop as he studied the board. His dark brows knitted together in deep concentration. He took the offered pawn, and Helena immediately advanced her dark-squared bishop, pinning his knight against his queen and locking down his center completely.

"Curious," George muttered under his breath, icy-blue eyes scanning the board with focus. "You are forcing my hand, Helena."

"I am merely executing the strategy I promised," Helena murmured softly. "You have played with logic for years, Your Grace. You calculate every risk, believing your defenses to be entirely invulnerable. But logic fails when confronted with an unpredictable force."

George attempted to launch a fierce counterattack, pushing his rooks forward to dismantle her offensive line, but Helena anticipated every move. She moved her knight into an outpost deep within his territory, exploiting a tiny weakness in his pawn structure — a gap created when he had taken her sacrificed pawn minutes earlier.

George stared at the board. Every piece Helena had moved, every subtle retreat and bold sacrifice, had been meticulously calculated to isolate his king behind his own pawns. He tried to maneuver his queen to defend his back rank, but it was already too late; her bishop blocked his escape route completely.

An awe-struck smile slowly broke across George's face. He looked up from the board, eyes shining as he realized he had been completely outplayed.

Helena reached out, picking up her ivory queen. Slowly, she slid the piece across the board, placing it adjacent to George's trapped king.

"Checkmate." Helena declared softly, her voice ringing with triumph.

Silence fell over the grand drawing room. George looked down at the board. Slowly, he raised his head, his gaze meeting her eyes.

"It appears you've finally beaten me." George said.
