“It was something,” I said as I walked into the kitchen. “I think my heart almost stopped when you flipped over, though.”
“That was just me keeping you on your toes.”
“How do you feel?”
“Much better after I took some ibuprofen. I’ll have to be careful with this, though.” She lifted her arm, which was in a temporary sling.
“It was still so cool.” Agnes popped up from behind Jade.
“Were you watching?”
“We were!” Agnes said. “Though, Beatrice got scared.”
“I wasn’t scared. It was just loud!”
“Still. You missed out on half the fun when you were hiding behind Dad.”
Atticus blinked when he heard what Agnes now referred to me as. Slowly, he turned to me with raised eyebrows. My cheeks heated and I shrugged.
“How about I get you some earplugs, Beatrice? Our town doctor, Henry, seems to have some sensory issues too. I saw that he had some today.”
“Yes, please.” Beatrice nodded.
“I was wondering how Henry was around so many people,” Jade said. “Then again, he saved my ass. So, I can’t be mad that he was there.”
“At least you seemed to successfully piss off Kevin. If you didn’t, then he’s probably scarred for life from Hugh.”
“We all are. Yet, everyone acts like it’s the first time we’ve seen it with him.” Jade rolled her eyes. “It’s not a rare occurrence.”
“I didn’t see anything. What happened?” Agnes tilted her head to the side.
“Yeah,” Beatrice added. “Someone covered our eyes.”
“That would’ve been me and Jackie,” Atticus said. “We had quick reflexes.”
“But I wanted to see!” Agnes pouted.
“Trust me, kid,” Jade said. “You did not want to see that.”
“At least everyone is using their powers for good this time,” I said.
“It only took us losing something like the spring. I wish it would have been turned into a park a long time ago. I bet it would have been a great one.”
I nodded. That certainly would have protected it from being sold like it was. But the only park in town was the one at the square. It had been there a long time, but had fallen into disarray until I paid to have it redone.
“Can we get go-karts and do the race next time?” Agnes asked Jade.
I cut in. “Nope.”
She groaned. “Dad is boring. He only wants us to be safe.”
“As much as it would be fun, I have to agree with him. You can join when we have the safety things figured out.”
“That’s a smart decision,” Atticus said.
“I can have them every once in a while.” She then turned to me. “What do you think, Gabriel? What would make our new race tradition safer?”
I blew out a long breath. “Not doing it.”
