But I didn’t know how to stop the anger building inside. I thought I’d put it all in the past, but apparently, it was just hiding away, waiting for the right moment to pop out and smack me in the face.

“What are you doing?”

I nearly jumped out of my skin at the sudden intrusion on my thoughts. Dash came running up alongside me, eating a chicken leg like he was just sitting at the dinner table.

“What the fuck are you doing?”

“Eating chicken.” He held it out to me. “Want some?”

“No,” I snapped, shoving his hand away. “Get that out of my face.”

“Your loss,” he shrugged.

“Don’t you know it’s dangerous to run and eat at the same time?”

“Yeah, but you know, after a while, you just roll with the punches.”

That made no sense. “What punches could you possibly have to roll with while eating chicken?”

“Andrew is back,” he grumbled, tearing off another piece of meat.

“Andrew…wait, is he the roughneck?”

“Yeah, and he’s sleeping on our couch.”

“What happened to his house?”

“Apparently, he put it up for sale because he wasn’t home enough, and he was tired of paying the mortgage.”

“So, his solution was to sleep on your couch?”

“Oh, no,” Dash chuckled. “That was Laura’s great plan. He’s my best friend. You don’t mind if he just sleeps on the couch while he’s in town, do you? Yeah, like I could just say no to that.”

“Wait, didn’t he move on after she said she wasn’t interested in him?”

“Yeah, but they cried and made up after like six months. He came back, and now everything is just hunky dory in their world.”

“What is with all of you saying shit like that? Hunky dory and willy nilly…It’s fucking ridiculous.”

“Well, excuse us for watching our language around kids,” he retorted.

“You’re not around kids. Use man words. It’s fucking ridiculous.”

“You already said that.”

“Well, I meant it.”

“Good, because you said it.”

Gritting my teeth, I picked up my speed, hoping to lose him. I wanted to clear my head. Not fill it with more shit from my teammates.

“Geez, is there a fire? Why are you running so fast?” he shouted, catching up to me as he tossed his chicken bone to the side of the road.

“I hope you plan on picking that up.”

“The rabbits will eat it.”

“Rabbits don’t eat meat.”
