He scowls, and I can’t help the chuckle that slips out.
He hates losing.
Especially in chess.
But his mind seems to be somewhere else today.
And I took advantage of it while I could.
My phone vibrates, and I retrieve it from my pocket to see a message.
Felix
It’s all set and will be delivered to you tomorrow morning.
Good. I slip my phone back into my pocket and lean into my chair.
“So.” Vin slides his palm around the back of his neck, squeezing his muscles. “Any word on—”
The door to Vin’s office opens, and Leo, Mauro, and Eli stride through, finding chairs to drop into.
I stretch out my arm and examine my watch. “You’re late.”
Leo glares. “I was busy when you called.”
I pinch the bridge of my nose. “Please tell me you didn’t answer my call in the middle of having sex.”
He smirks, folding his arms over his chest. “Okay, I’ll tell you I didn’t answer your call in the middle of having sex.”
Vin rolls his eyes. “Does Scarlett ever get a break from you?”
Leo’s brows furrow. “Why would I ever punish her like that?”
“All right, well…” Eli begins. “Now that we’re all here, want to explain why you’ve called this urgent meeting?”
I tap my knuckles on the arm of my chair, my eyes flicking between each of them. “I’m going to kill Garrett.”
Their eyes widen, and then they immediately look at Vin.
Vin sighs. “It’s time.”
I stand, dragging my fingers through my hair as I approach the liquor cabinet and grab enough glasses for all of us. “No more playing games. No more waiting around. Friday is the night I’m going to make him pay for what he put Charlotte through.” I grasp the bottle of Macallan and pour a finger’s worth into each glass.
Leo rests his hands behind his head. “Why Friday?”
I step toward the desk and retrieve the invitation, offering it over to Leo, who quickly reads it.
“The dweeb is throwing himself a birthday party?” he asks, raising an eyebrow.
I hand everyone a glass. “Apparently so.”
Mauro grunts, gaining my attention. Why would he invite us when he knows we hate him?
I shake my head. “We don’t know why, but I can’t pass up this chance to kill him.”
“And how,” Eli starts, “do you plan on killing him in a room full of people?”
I slip a hand into my pocket and retrieve the small vial Kai handed me this morning, holding it up. “With this.”
