She motions her hands up and down before her. “If everything goes okay, give or take another day.”

“If it doesn’t?”

“We start over.” Kai shrugs.

Silence hangs between us, my eyes on the machine.

“Make it work.” They regard me. “You do this.” I glance between them. “And each of you gets a ten percent bonus.”

Kai’s eyes brighten as he salutes. “We’re on it.”

“Any movement from the Vasilievs?” I ask, my gaze on Ethan.

He shakes his head. “Nothing. They’ve been unusually quiet.”

Not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing, but I’m sure we’ll find out soon enough.

“And Garrett?”

A humorless smirk tugs at Ethan’s mouth. “He spent last night at an underground club with a brunette practically hanging off his arm all night.”

I scoff, shaking my head. “Real fucking heartbroken.”

“Other than that, nothing out of the ordinary to report.”

“Good.” I smooth a hand down the front of my shirt, tucking the folder beneath my arm. “Run a full perimeter sweep. I want every camera, sensor, and security system checked. If something’s out of place, I want to know before it becomes a problem.”

“You got it.”

My attention shifts to Amelia. “We have recruits starting next week. I’d like you to run a thorough background check on each one. Financials. Family ties. Online activity. I want to know everything. Mauro will be sending you the names in an email.”

“Consider it taken care of.” She drops down to her seat, and her fingers immediately begin flying across the keyboard.

I give the room one last glance. “I’ll be in my office.”

I cross the room to the farthest door and open it, stepping inside before I close it tightly behind me.

Dropping into my chair, I exhale and set the manila folder on my desk. I lean forward to open it when my phone vibrates. I pull it from my pocket, and fury simmers within me at the sight of the name.

I answer it, my voice cold and detached. “Garrett.”

“You fucking son of a bitch!”

A smirk grows across my face because now I know exactly why he’s calling. “What seems to be the problem?”

“You,” he breathes harshly. “You did this!”

“You have to be more specific.” I lean back in my chair.

“First, you dare to burn down my fucking home and kill my guards!”

“Someone’s grumpy.” I tsk, pissing him off even further.

“And now, you’ve gone ahead and transferred Charlotte’s life insurance policy directly into that fucking women’s shelter!”

I pull the phone from my ear and put it on speakerphone. “Hmm.” I lace my fingers behind my head. “Doesn’t sound like something I would do.”

“I know it was you!”
