‘And Etienne,’ he said. ‘He’s a chef and makes the most amazing pancakes every Tuesday because he believes pancakes are too good to limit to Shrove Tuesday every year.’
‘I have to agree with him, I love pancakes,’ Robyn said. ‘Why would you limit something that gives you so much pleasure?’ Fox felt a tug in his belly at that, thinking about the pleasure he’d like to give her.
‘I’d do anything for them. They’re the only bit of adult company I tend to get.’
‘I get that,’ she said. ‘However wonderful babies are, it’s a different kind of enjoyment. It’s been quite an adjustment to be honest.’
Fox shot a look at her beside him.
‘Tough times since she was born?’ he asked.
‘I wouldn’t say I’ve had postnatal depression or anything serious like that,’ she said. ‘But I feel like I’m constantly re-evaluating a lot of things, what’s important, what’s not. It’s a lot of change. I don’t feel as carefree as I used to, but I think I feel more complete.’ She glanced his way. ‘If that makes sense?’
‘Perfect sense,’ he agreed. ‘I worry so much more than I ever did when Meg was around. But I love my life with the boys, I’d never be without them. It’s just different.’
‘Very different,’ Robyn laughed. ‘Twister is my new dance routine.’
The mention of Twister took him back to that mat and his skin tingled with the thought of being pressed against her. Dammit. Now he was thinking about her body again.
A sudden burst of activity on screen meant they both had to double their efforts to finish the level. They reached the finish at exactly the same time, and were catapulted onto the wall of fame. They’d made it.
She whooped, he cheered. They both turned to high-five and the shift in the bean bag rolled them inwards until they were facing each other, her thigh pressing gently on his. Last time they’d been together like this, they’d gone from the game to the bar, then the bedroom. And everything had been really simple, and really, really, fucking good.
All week he’d noticed the scent of her in rooms after she’d left, her perfume cutting through a house full of boys. All week, he’d watched her bend to talk to the boys, her yoga trousers showing the perfect curve of her butt that he was supposed to be ignoring.
Now, they faced each other, and all of a sudden there were no other distractions. Every day he’d remembered the feel of her in his hands. And now he wanted to put them on her again, more than anything.
‘That was great,’ Fox managed to say, his voice low, trying to keep things normal when all he could think of was her body. She was so close. He could map the freckles on her nose. Robyn’s eyes met and held his, and her gaze hit him in the pit of his stomach. That look. Fuck. It made everything stop, anything else fade away. It had been the same that night. Once she’d looked at him like that, it was only going to go one way.
‘I’d forgotten how much fun it is to play with someone else,’ she said quietly. ‘I haven’t played with anyone since I played with you.’
Fox raised one eyebrow, hearing the tease in her voice.
‘And playing by yourself is just not quite the same,’ he said.
Robyn smiled, just as he hoped she would. The sort of smile where her lips parted slowly over her teeth.
‘No,’ she agreed. ‘It most certainly isn’t.’
He let his gaze move from her eyes to her open lips. The electricity between them grew in intensity, until he could feel it thrumming throughout his body.
Fuck, the things he wanted to do to her. Here. Now. On this bean bag.
‘Red,’ he whispered. ‘You look so good right now.’ She lifted her chin, her heart-shaped face so tantalisingly close that he could feel her breath on his face. He dipped towards her, wanting to kiss her, and hold her, and peel the clothes from her body.
A noise sounded from somewhere like a soft gurgle, but they both knew at once what it was. They paused, their breath ragged, lips a centimetre from each other. He was hard against her thigh.
The sound came again. Willow was waking up; the spell was broken.
‘That’s Willow . . .’ Robyn said, shifting upwards already, her body pulling away as his arms released her. ‘I need to see to her.’
Fox rubbed a hand through his hair and sat up too. She was already on her feet, looking slightly dazed and confused, but the moment had gone.
‘Red . . .’ he started, not sure what to say but knowing he had to say something.
She brushed a hair away from her face as she turned to him.
‘What are we doing?’ Robyn said, laughing lightly but shaking her head as if in disbelief. Oh God. What had he been thinking? She worked for him.
