“No, no. Nothing. It was all very proper. She stayed for the menorah lighting at the end of the night, and I drove her home and… yeah.”
“And?”
“We said good night, that’s all. Vertically. Outside her door. Your door. Whatever.”
“My brain is so confused by this.” Phoebe turned and started another loop around Arden’s yard.
“Mine too. In a good way.”
“I guess there’s something in the air,” Phoebe muttered.
“What do you mean?”
She hesitated. “I’m going to Jonathan Lee’s family’s Christmas Eve dinner.”
“Jonathan Lee?” Sam shouted so loudly that Phoebe held the phone away from her ear.
“Uh-huh, you remember my friend from college?”
“Remember? You guys were disgusting in college.”
“I wouldn’t say disgusting.”
“You were all over him. Even when you were dating that jock, whatever his name was. Didn’t he break up with you because he thought you were cheating on him with Jonathan?”
“Not exactly. But kind of.”
“And didn’t you break Jonathan’s heart after graduation?”
“Geez, Sam. That’s a bit harsh.”
“That’s how I remember it.”
“Well, anyway… he’s in town for the holidays, and we ran into each other, and… here we are.”
“Is this like a romantic thing, or…?”
“No. We’re working on a business plan together, actually. I don’t think he feels that way about me anymore. It’s been so long. But…”
“But? Oh no, Phoebe. No.”
“What?”
“Don’t tell me you have feelings for him.”
“Why not?”
“Because—because why couldn’t you have realized that back then?”
“I was young and stupid.”
“And now?”
“Now…” Phoebe trailed off. She didn’t know how she felt now. She had an inkling, but it was all so fresh.
“You have a thing for Jonathan Lee.” Sam’s voice was awed. “Did you guys kiss?”
“No! Definitely not. Although… he did sleep over.”
