Epilogue

THREE WEEKS LATER

Luca’s hair looks like molten copper in the sunlight. It’s midday, or maybe early afternoon, when Florence enters her room to find Luca lying on the bed, her hands resting, palms-up, next to her head. Her shirt has ridden up to expose a sliver of her soft tummy and the faint smattering of golden hair disappearing beneath the waistband of her jeans.

Her eyes track Florence as she walks toward her.

“Hey,” Florence says, crawling onto the mattress. Her dress inches up as she straddles Luca’s thighs. “Were you waiting for me?”

Luca nods. The smile she gives Florence is warm and languid. Florence wants to bite it. “Yeah. Miray let me in.” She tucks one of Florence’s curls behind her ear. “Did you have a good morning?”

“Mm-hm,” Florence confirms. Leaning down, she captures Luca’s lips in a soft kiss. “I had three piano lessons, and Toni and I went out for coffee in between.”

“Yeah? How is she?”

“I truly could not tell,” Florence admits. “She wouldn’t really answer when I asked. We mostly talked logistics.”

Florence has no idea how Toni is feeling about moving in two days, or about the breakup in general. They didn’t speak about it at all during their last weeks of tour, and when she saw her today, Toni appeared as unruffled as ever. Beyond a little tightness around her eyes when she talked about the painstaking business of divvying up the household between her and Esther, there wasn’t a single crack in her composure.

“Did she say if she needed any help moving her stuff?” Luca asks.

“She says she’s all right,” Florence reports. She focuses on Luca again, using her thumb to gently brush the hair out of her eyes. “What about you? How was your morning?”

“Missed you when I woke up. I didn’t even hear you leave.”
