A Married Little Christmas

“You know they’re going to do this, right?” he said. “With or without us.”

I looked into my soup. “I know.”

“It’s not going to last,” he said. “They won’t make it to next Christmas.”

“Of course they won’t,” I said, waving my fork around. “Because in February all this Christmas magic will be gone, they will have lived together for a few months, and the novelty will have worn off and the reality of living where it takes two weeks to get things delivered will have set in.”

“But they’re going to do it anyway,” he said.

I blew out a breath. “I’m afraid you’re right.”

We both sat there, thinking.

“What if…”

“What if what?” I said.

“What if you and I come up with something that we can get them to agree to. Something that represents both their interests.”

I set my fork down and wiped my mouth with a napkin. “I’m listening…”

“We write the prenup together. Talk it out. Present it to them in the morning.”

“I’m not a lawyer,” I said.

“I can draft it.”

“And if you write it up with some loophole that fucks her over made out of legal speak that I don’t understand?”

“I would not do that,” he said.

“And how do I know that?”

“You can send it out to be reviewed by whoever you want, I don’t care. I’m not trying to screw you or her over. I’m proposing an alliance. They’re going to do this whether we want them to or not. We clearly don’t have enough influence to talk them out of it, so let’s try one step down and talk them into at least protecting their assets.”

I studied him for a moment. I could not believe this was currently my Thursday night.

I stared into my ramen. “God. I was supposed to go on a cruise this week.”

“Yeah, well. Nobody’s week is going the way anybody planned. I’m back in Santa’s butt crack—”

I coughed out a laugh.

He glanced at me. “I did like that you called it that. It’s accurate. And funny.”

I smiled. Maybe the first real one since I’d gotten here.

We shared a moment of silence while he waited for my reply.

“Okay,” I said. “An alliance.”

The corners of his lips went up. “An alliance.”

We shook hands and got to work.
