A Married Little Christmas

She glanced at me. “Even if Nick throws the garter at William? And he catches it?”

I pursed my lips. She had me there.

“I can tell you like him,” she said. “I think he likes you too.”

I stopped to look at her. “Why? Did Nick say something?”

“No, but he can tell. He danced with you at the engagement party last night and Nick says he never dances.”

I wrinkled my forehead. “Really?”

“Yeah. Also, he checks you out.”

I rolled my eyes. “Stop, no, he doesn’t.”

“Yup, he does. He does a lot.”

I felt another blush creep up my cheeks.

“I do like him,” I admitted. Even if he was born a criminal.

Someone tapped a horn at us. It was the guys. “Need a ride?” William said, pulling up to the curb.

I leaned down to talk to him through his window. “Hmmm, it’s not a one-horse open sleigh…”

“But it does have seat warmers,” he said.

“Sold.”

I went to get in the back seat but Nick got out and jogged around the car. “You take the front. I’ll sit with my bride.” He opened the door for Noel and waited for her to get in while I got into the passenger side.

“Hey,” I said, closing the door.

William smiled at me. “Hey.”

We looked at each other just a fraction of a second too long before the whoop of a police siren snapped us out of it. I twisted to look through the back windshield. Cop car lights.

“More crimes, William?”

He scoffed.

The sheriff came around to the driver’s side and William lowered the window. “Hi, Wayne.”

“William.” He looked into the back seat. “Noel, Nicholas.”

“What can we do for you?” William asked.

“I just want to make sure you’re not participating in anything nefarious while you’re here. Got some complaints of a snowman being assaulted. Something about yellow snow?”

William rubbed his forehead. “I can assure you, I had nothing to do with that.”

“He was with me all morning, Wayne,” Nick said, leaning between the seats.

“And he was with me all night,” I said, smiling prettily. “All night.”

William choked on his laugh.

Wayne narrowed his eyes. “All right. I’ll take your word for it. This time.” He straightened and pulled up his pants. “Wanted to ask you, I need my will looked at. Never got around to redoing it after Mel passed. Think you could swing by and take a look?”
