Her eyes scanned the marks on his chest. “You weren’t enthralled.”

A muscle in his jaw feathered. “I told you: I’ll kill Rakkley willingly. No need to put me under enthrallment.”

“But then why are you using this much Dark Magic?”

“What would you have me use? White spe—fuck,” he hissed mid-word as Mira flicked her wrist and his flesh singed together instantly.

“Sorry.” She couldn’t hide a smirk.

He gave her a hard stare.

“I don’t think Oliver told the council about what Rakkley said to me.”

“I sure hope not. I asked him not to.”

Mira dropped the vial in her hand but caught it before it could hit the floor. “You what?”

“I asked him not to.”

“You asked Oliver?”

“Yes. I asked him to give me time to find and kill Rakkley myself. I told your Caster friend that the council knowing Rakkley came specifically for you would be dangerous. To my surprise, we agreed on something for once.”

She tried to picture the two of them having that conversation.

Finishing up the wound, she placed the supplies back in her leather pouch. “You should still be conserving your powers.”

He grabbed her wrist and pulled her closer, maneuvering her onto his lap. Even his lips seemed colder than usual as they slid along her neck. Teeth grazing her skin.

“I know how you could make it better.”

He still smelled like spearmint, but the scent of Dark Magic clung to him, too.

She pushed him back into the couch with both hands and shook her head at him. “You need to rest and heal.”

He sighed, his head reclining in defeat. “You run a tight ship, Nurse Winters.”

“I’m not your nurse. I don’t wish that fate on anyone. You make a terrible patient.”

He chuckled, his hands still resting on her hips. “I don’t believe—”

A scroll dropped on the coffee table next to them. Aidric flinched. She knew what it meant before he unfurled the scroll and read it.

“I’m being summoned.”

“Corvin can’t be serious. You just got back. You are drenched in Dark Magic.”

Aidric stood up and grabbed his shirt, slowly buttoning it up again.

“Say something,” she insisted.

“What do you want me to say?”

“That it’s time to steal Mercer’s amulet.”

“We’ve been over this. My priorities have shifted.”

“Well, mine haven’t.”
