There were so many unbelievable things she had learned during the last few days that it was starting to feel like someone was playing a bad trick on her. “I didn’t know that was possible. I thought you can only acquire signifiers in school.”
“That is what those who run these institutions would want you to believe, but magic is everywhere. If you know how to call upon it, it will answer.”
She had called upon Dark Magic? In response, her Shadowflame moved ever so slightly.
“Since you have no recollection of your dark powers, please refrain from using them without supervision.”
She didn’t want to use them at all—or did she? They were part of her. The reason why she no longer suffered from the scar.
“How did I do it? How did I remove Synth from my scar?”
“That is a story better saved for another day.”
Part of her wanted to protest and demand answers, but the how did not matter for today. All that mattered was that her scar was silent.
When Obryn left and she was all alone in a place that should be familiar and yet wasn’t, she pulled out the folder he had given her. Each time she looked at it she hoped it would suddenly spark a memory. But when she stared at Dawson’s picture, he remained a stranger to her.
Mira could return to Yharvan. Perhaps she should.
When she went to bed, she no longer had nightmares. But in the darkness, cold, silver eyes haunted her, demanding answers.

On the third day after waking up, Mira met three Wielders who were supposedly her friends, although she had no recollection of ever meeting them. Mira felt out of place when she knocked on the door of the mansion.
A woman with blue eyes and black hair opened the door. A lace glove covered her right hand, and Mira wasn’t sure if that was customary among Wielders. Should she be wearing one? Without saying a word, the woman grabbed her by her arm and led her into the lavish living room.
“We wanted to come see you earlier, but Obryn was adamant friends should be reintroduced slowly. Casters once again got preferential treatment, but what else is new?”
Ella had prepared her for this meeting and told her the names of her Wielder friends. Mira ran through them in her mind.
The Wielder with brown hair, Kane Harrington, cocked his head at her like he was trying to figure her out. “So you don’t remember us at all?”
She shook her head. It wasn’t her fault, but she still felt bad about it.
The girl, Amelia Montgomery, sighed dramatically. “Oh spheres, we have to do this all over again, don’t we? We’re friends. You like us better than your silly little Caster group.”
“I do?”
“Well, you’re a Wielder. You should have your wits about you.”
It still didn’t feel real. “I guess I am.”
Harrington scoffed. “You guess? Have you looked at your hand? There’s a reason you killed Rakkley.”
There it was again. The feeling of having the floor ripped out from underneath her. “I did what?”
“Well, together with Dawson.”
The boy with short dark hair, Evren, pushed himself off the wall. “We were supposed to introduce memories to her slowly.”
The grin on Harrington’s face only grew wider. “Does that mean you haven’t used your Dark Magic since you woke up from your little slumber?”
“I haven’t. Obryn says I’m not supposed to unsupervised.”
“Well, we can supervise you.”
Evren huffed in frustration. “Which part of slowly did you not understand?”
