Rachel had put a mask over the man's nose and mouth, but he had no idea if the guy was even breathing. They were almost out of the warehouse when firefighters began pouring inside.
"Anyone else in here?" one of the firefighters asked.
"I don't think so," Rachel said.
The firefighters took over, taking the man outside, with Rachel still keeping the IV steady, as he and Zane followed closely behind.
When they finally got outside, he was surprised by the number of emergency vehicles, fire engines, ambulances, and police. Medics raced to meet them, with Rachel telling them what she knew while they went to work on the man, who was still unconscious.
More medics arrived, offering them oxygen and cold bottles of water as they checked them out. He wanted to put his arms around Rachel, but she was in doctor mode, and that didn't annoy him; it impressed the hell out of him. After everything she'd been through, she was still looking out for someone in trouble.
"Hell of a woman," Zane murmured, drawing his attention back to him. "Never seen anything like that."
"She saw someone defenseless and in trouble, and she couldn't leave him."
They exchanged a look, both knowing that most people would have run for their lives.
"I'm going to check in with Jason," Zane said as he moved away.
As the ambulance doors closed, Rachel turned and walked straight into his arms. He held on too tight, and she let him. She smelled like smoke. One of them was shaking. He thought it might be him.
"I'm okay," she said against his chest.
"Give me a minute," he said roughly. "I'm not."
Despite his desire to never let her go, he had to. She gave him a tremulous look. "I knew you'd show up, Tyler. I didn't know how you'd figure out where I was, but I was confident that you would."
"I almost didn't get here in time."
"But you did."
"Barely. Did they hurt you, Rachel?"
She shook her head. "No. They just locked us in that room to die. I didn't talk to any of them. Just Naomi. Where is she? She didn't get away, did she?"
"No, she's being detained by my team. Who was that man on the gurney, Rachel?"
"There was an empty vial with the name B. Young. I don't know who he is, but he's in bad shape. I'm not sure he'll survive."
"You did everything you could to give him the best chance. And he's a Marine. Jack mentioned he'd met a Brett Young in the waiting room at Waverly, and he had seen him again in the basement."
"What they did to him… What they did to Jack…" Anger brought the fire into her eyes. "It was evil. Flat out evil."
"I couldn't agree more."
"And Naomi acted like it was just a referral system."
"What did she tell you?"
"She said Ethan Hollander was the main contact at East River. His cousin, Jasmine, was once married to Neil Levitan. That's how they connected. Ethan asked Naomi to send the letters and gave her cash bonuses in return. Naomi claims she had no idea what was really going on except that they were siphoning patients to Waverly so they could get better care. She had it all rationalized in her head. Oh, and Andrew Lang, a nurse, was the man who took Jack out of the hospital and set the fire in the stairwell." She took a sip from her water bottle. "There's more, but I need to get my head together. I'm sure I'm forgetting something. What's going to happen now?"
"We'll find Levitan and Conover and bring them in for questioning. Same goes for the people at East River. We'll get a search warrant for Waverly. There may be nothing left to salvage there or here, but that may not be necessary. Naomi is already talking. And I don't think Ethan Hollander or this Andrew Lang will be difficult to turn. They're prime targets for plea deals."
"What about the men in the van who kidnapped me?"
"Two of them are dead. One is at the hospital now. They shot at us when we arrived."
Her eyes widened. "I hope no one on your team was hurt."
