"Good point. Levitan asked for his lawyer, so we weren't able to question him further."
"What about Vivienne?"
"She's not talking, either, and I get the feeling she'll be the last one to speak. She's definitely well trained in the art of silence." He paused. "You should be proud of yourself, Rachel. The only reason we found out where Levitan was going was because he made a call from his office, stating that he was heading to the airfield. Without that bug, he would be out of the country by now, and so would Vivienne Troye."
"Thank God neither of them got away."
"Levitan told me that Conover didn't know anything about his basement projects. Zane has been going through the financials at Waverly, and it appears that Levitan disguised the intensive treatment expenses under research, and payments were made to a bogus off-site shell company. But we'll see how that all pans out."
"It's nice to think that a decorated soldier like Frank Conover wasn't knowingly exploiting the veterans he was supposed to be helping."
"I hope his lack of oversight was not just a way of gaining deniability. But at the moment, it looks like Conover is in the clear. We're still going to interrogate him."
"What about the people at East River?"
"We arrested Dr. Ethan Hollander and Andrew Lang. Ethan claimed he only sent patients who weren't getting help at East River to Waverly because he knew how good Neil was. He said he didn't know how far Neil was taking the treatment until Jack showed up in the ER in terrible condition. By then, he felt like he was in too deep, especially when Andrew told him that he'd put Jack in the van and sent him to a private lab that Levitan was running somewhere outside of Waverly. Hollander also said he was shocked to learn that Megan Prescott had been stabbed. That's when he became afraid for his life. He wanted out, but no one was going to let him get out."
"Did he mention his relationship with Vivienne?"
"No, and I didn't realize she'd been in his office, so we'll take that up with him later."
"What did Andrew have to say?"
"He wasn't as interested in talking to us as Ethan was. He also requested a lawyer."
"I wonder if his girlfriend, Lily, knew what he was doing. She's one of my nurses. She's so sweet. She's always bringing me food that her mom cooks for me. Naomi said Lily didn't know anything, although she would talk about our patients with Andrew."
"We'll speak to her at some point. My team also searched Waverly Health last night. The basement was torn apart, but we have all their files, computers, everything. That's how Zane got into their financials. This will be a long investigation, Rachel. But we're moving right along. We do know that Vivienne's people searched Jack's apartment Friday morning and came up empty. They knew he'd been pocketing meds, so they rigged the door. If he ever got loose and went home, it would take care of him and anything he'd hidden. When that didn't happen, they sent someone to finish the search in the storage room."
"That makes sense."
"And the van at St. Anne's was there for Naomi. Ethan told Vivienne he was sending her to check on Megan. Apparently, Ethan was panicking. And they believed Naomi was as well. They were cleaning up a loose end in Naomi and sending Ethan a message to keep his mouth shut. You running after Naomi handed them two loose ends to tie up."
"That was a bad move on my part."
"You couldn't foresee what would happen. Anyway, as I said, there's a lot to wrap up, but we've made a good start. We'll get justice for everyone before we're done."
"I like your confidence, Tyler. The important thing is that no one else will be hurt. Hopefully, we can find all the people who were treated in that program and make sure they're doing okay."
"That's also at the top of my list."
"Does Jack know about all this?" she asked.
"I sent him some updates around midnight. I'll check in with him this afternoon."
"Where's he going to go? His apartment was burned down. It doesn’t sound like he has much money."
"Evan talked to me and the others about pooling our resources to get Jack into an apartment and to cover his newly discovered daughter's tuition for next year. We should be able to put him up somewhere for at least six months, so he has a chance to get back on his feet."
"That's very generous."
"Jack doesn't want any part of it," he said dryly. "He's being typical Jack, not looking at the big picture, giving us grief for trying to help him. He told Evan he doesn't take charity, and it's bad enough they've been babysitting him for days. But Evan said it wasn't his decision. They were renting him a place. He could stay there or not, and they were sending the money to the school with or without his permission."
She smiled, seeing the love in his eyes. "You really care about all of them, don’t you?"
"More than I realized. Even Jack, who I find annoying as hell at times, is still one of my brothers. So, we'll take care of him, whether he wants it or not."
"As you should."
