"That's great. And Frank Conover really wasn't involved?"
"No. He actually feels betrayed by Levitan."
"He's joining a big club of people who feel that way."
"What about the people whose identities might have been compromised?"
"With the help of the CIA and other agencies, we've located assets and agents who might have had their covers blown. They're being reassigned or having their identities changed, whatever needs to happen to keep them safe."
She nodded in approval. "Good. The most important thing to me is that this is over, and veterans will no longer be treated as guinea pigs for Levitan's experimental program. I find his behavior to be the most egregious of all of them. He's a doctor. He took an oath to do no harm. He's a disgrace."
"Well, he won't be able to practice medicine again, and he will be going to jail."
"Thank God!"
As he pulled into the parking garage of a tall midtown Manhattan apartment building in front of them, she said, "This is where Jack lives?"
"Yes. On the thirty-seventh floor." He parked in a visitor's space and turned off the engine.
"Seems kind of fancy for Jack," she added, surprised at his new place.
"TJ's brother-in-law is a realtor. He got us a deal. We rented the place for six months at a bargain price. Then Jack will be on his own. Let's go." He grabbed a twelve-pack of beer out of his trunk, and they headed up to the apartment.
As he walked into the crowded apartment, Tyler was happy to see his Delta family out in full force: Evan, Gary, TJ, and their significant others. He was also happy to see Jason and his partner, Alisa, hanging out by the kitchen island with Zane, Kara, Max, and Cole, who had all spent a lot of time talking to Jack in the past week.
The one-bedroom apartment was crowded, and in the middle of it was Jack, looking far better than he had a week ago. He was still paler than normal, but he was himself again.
As they made their way through the crowd, Kara grabbed Rachel to introduce her to Max. While they were chatting, he made his way into the kitchen, saying hello to everyone along the way. Zane and Cole were happy to take his twelve-pack and start popping the tops.
"Iowa," Jack said, his booming voice cutting through the crowd. "About time you got here. Come into the bedroom. I want to talk to you for a second."
He followed him into the bedroom, surprised when Jack shut the door. "Everything okay?"
"Better than okay. It occurred to me that I never really said thank you."
"I'm sure you did."
"I didn't. Or I don't remember doing it. I had no right to expect you to help me. I was an ass to you when you left the Army."
"You were," he agreed. "But that doesn't mean I wouldn't try to save your ass."
"That's why I knew I had to contact you. Even with everything that had happened, I could trust you. You were always the Boy Scout of the group."
"Are you trying to thank me or insult me?"
"That was a compliment, Iowa. You had your head on straight. You always knew right from wrong, which boundaries to push, which lines to stay behind. I never gave you enough credit for that."
"You weren't nearly as bad as I made you out to be when I left, Jack. I was still reeling from what had happened to TJ and losing Evan to civilian life. It felt like everything was falling apart."
"I felt the same way. But you found your feet faster than I did."
"How are your job prospects going?"
"Once I'm medically cleared, Max is going to hire me as a bodyguard for his security company."
He smiled. "That's perfect. He's a good guy."
"For a spook," Jack said with a laugh.
