“That’s basically what your pastor said. And, Olivia...” He points at me with his coffee cup. “You can’t back out of a dare.”
For one second I just stare at him.
Then I burst into laughter.
Not a polite laugh.
The kind I can’t stop even if I try.
Luke looks completely confused.
“What?”
I shake my head, trying unsuccessfully to compose myself.
“You…” Another laugh escapes. “You have no idea.”
“What?”
I wipe at the corner of my eye.
“This...” I gesture between us. “The coffee. The texting. You.”
He furrows his brow.
“What about me?”
“It all started because of a dare.”
“I’m sorry...” He leans back in his chair. “What?”
I laugh again.
“My two best friends and their husbands were visiting Gray and Ivy’s newborn at the hospital.”
He nods slowly.
“They started talking about how they all ended up together.” I smile, remembering it. “Each relationship started with a dare.”
His grin begins to spread. “Oh no.”
“Oh yes.” I nod. “They decided it was my turn. So they dared me to text a guy named Paul.”
Luke laughs. “Paul.”
I nod.
“The only problem was, I typed one digit wrong.” I shake my head. “And somehow...”
“You got me.”
“I got you.”
For a moment we just look at each other.
Then he laughs again, pointing between us.
“You’re telling me... I only exist because your friends dared you to text another guy?”
