“I think he might be teaching her things that aren’t right, but I don’t know enough to accuse him of anything. You do.”

“What makes you think that?”

I tell him about Pine Ridge. About Brennan teaching Luna Selena that there has to be balance and that the request should have gone through the Alpha office because it involved warriors and outside security. Then I tell him about the other lessons that have started bothering me now that I’m paying attention. Darian’s expression grows more serious with every word.

“I need someone who actually had Alpha heir training to hear him,” I say. “If I’m wrong, tell me I’m wrong.”

“And if you’re not?”

I hold his gaze.

“Then tell me that too.”

Darian's POV

Arlene is at her desk when I arrive, one hand resting beneath her belly while she reads something on her screen.

I stop beside her chair. “How are you feeling?”

“Pregnant.”

I smile and lean down to kiss her forehead. “That bad?”

“Ask me again when your son stops using my ribs for practice.”

My hand settles over her belly. The pup moves beneath my palm, and I forget what I was about to say.

Arlene looks up at me. “You came to check on me, remember?”

“I am checking on you.”

“You’re checking on him.”

“He’s part of you.”

She smiles, and I kiss her again.

Across the room, Elder Brennan clears his throat.

I glance over. Luna Selena is seated at her desk with her notebook open, and Brennan stands beside her with a pack law text in his hand.

“Sorry,” I say. “I didn’t mean to interrupt.”

Brennan looks me over, his gaze lingering on my hand against Arlene’s belly. “Of course. I understand you have responsibilities to your mate.”

The words are polite. The tone is not.

“I do.”

“Then I’m sure you’ll want to make certain she’s comfortable.” He turns back to Luna Selena. “We have rather important matters to discuss.”

I keep my expression neutral. “Mind if I sit with her for a while?”

Brennan gives a small wave of his hand. “If you must. Just try not to distract the Luna.”

Arlene’s fingers pause over her keyboard.
