Rise of the Reborn Beta

His eyebrows rise. “I wasn't applying for the Beta position.”

“I know. Sometimes it's the wolves who don't want power who deserve it the most.”

He leans back in his chair. “There are plenty of wolves vying for that position.”

“And they aren't right for it. That's why they haven't been chosen.”

Darian studies me. “Alpha Rylan, I don't need to be rewarded for doing what's right. If you feel guilty, there are other ways to work through that. I'll help you figure something out.”

I shake my head. “This isn't guilt.” He says nothing.

“My Lycan has claimed you as our Beta since we sparred the first time. I've just been stubborn.” Darian's expression changes. “This is me finally stopping that. You've earned this position. You deserve it. You have good character, and you're someone I can trust.”

He looks down for a moment, then backs at me. “I didn't come here looking for power, Alpha Rylan. I just wanted a place where my family could live safely. Somewhere my pups grow up healthy and happy. Somewhere my mate could be safe, happy, smile, laugh, and be herself.

His mouth twitches. “Even if that means I'm doing all the chores like a single dad while she's pregnant.”

I laugh. “You may need to move into the pack house.” He raises an eyebrow. “There's a Beta floor. You and Arlene could move there with the pups. The omegas can help with the housework and the children, especially once you're busy with Beta duties.”

Darian considers that. “Arlene would have to agree.”

“Of course. I'm not suggesting you move your pregnant mate without asking her.

“Good. Because I'm not explaining that one to her.”

I laugh again. Then I lean forward. Tapping my fingers on the desk. “And I need someone who will call me on my shit. Someone who has the power to challenge me but chooses to work with me instead.” Darian looks at me for a moment. “If I'm not around, and there's one wolf I would trust to watch out for Selena and our pup, it would be you.” His expression softens. I point at him. “And you have to promise to keep my annoying little brother Ronan away from them.”

Darian laughs. “Deal.” I smile. He looks at me for another moment, then says, “I can accept under one condition.”

I raise an eyebrow. “Name it.”

“If we disagree on something, we talk about it. And if we still can't see eye to eye, let's spar before a decision is made. Sparring helps clear your mind.”

I look at him. “I'm not saying we have to agree on everything,” he continues. “But I want us to be able to work through it before either of us makes a decision we'll regret.”

I nod. “I can agree to that.”

Darian considers me for a moment, then nods. “Then I accept.”

My Lycan rises.

Finally, we have our Beta.

I smile. “Good.”

Darian looks at me. “Thank you, Alpha Rylan.”

“One more thing.” He raises an eyebrow. “When we're in private, you don't have to call me Alpha. You can just call me Rylan.”

He looks at me for a moment. “Alright, Rylan.” I smile.

Then Selena's voice suddenly comes through a mindlink to both of us.

“Rylan! Darian! Arlene's water just broke!”

Darian is on his feet and running out the door before I can answer. I stand and open the mindlink. “We're on our way.”
