Mate.
"I know."
Darian's scent surrounds me beneath the blood and wolfsbane filling these tunnels. More importantly, I can feel him again. Our bond isn't as strong as it should be, but his presence is there. Warm. Furious. Alive.
Candice's smile widens. “You really thought we'd leave the tunnels unprotected?”
Darian growls.
Candice lifts one hand. A rune carved into the wall flashes red.
“Down!”
Darian turns and throws himself over me as something whistles past us. An arrow strikes the wall where my head was a second ago. Another flies past his shoulder. Rylan grabs Selena around the waist and pulls her down as three more arrows shoot from narrow openings hidden between the stones.
The smell reaches me.
Wolfsbane.
“Don't let them hit you!”
No shit, Arlene.
My mother's voice practically answers from the grave.
Darian snatches an arrow out of the air before it reaches us and snaps it in half. The tunnel erupts around us. Runes flare along the walls one after another as stone grinds behind us.
I twist around just as a massive silver covered barrier drops from the ceiling and slams into the passage we came through.
Selena jumps. “Okay, I officially hate this place.”
“Get in line.”
Rylan snarls and starts toward Candice, but the floor lights up beneath his feet.
“Rylan!”
He jumps back as silver spikes shoot from the ground. Candice laughs, and I glare at her.
That bitch.
Rogues pour into the passage behind her. Darian looks at Rylan. Neither male says a word before they charge.
Rylan hits the first rogue hard enough to send him flying into the wall. Darian ducks beneath another male's blade, drives his shoulder into his stomach, then throws him directly into two rogues coming behind him.
“Stay with Selena!” Darian shouts.
Like I need to be told.
I move in front of her as another arrow flies toward us. I knock it away, but pain shoots through my arm from the impact. My wolf growls inside me.
Weak.
"We're getting better."
Kill.
Despite everything, I almost smile. "Definitely getting better."
