Rise of the Reborn Beta

Joshua laughs as he passes us.

Michael releases me. “You’re next.”

Joshua immediately points at him. “Don’t fucking touch me.”

I grin, and Joshua’s eyes narrow.

“Carter.”

“What?”

“Don’t.”

Too late. I catch his hand while Michael grabs his shoulder, and Joshua curses as both of us slap his back.

“You assholes.”

I release him, laughing. For the first time since Rylan’s warning tore me out of bed, I can breathe. We held the line. Our pack is safe. Now we get answers.

The prisoners aren’t happy about walking, but I don’t care. Pack Warriors surround them while Joshua, Michael and I escort the group toward the pack house. Every step reminds me of another injury, but my wolf is riding the same strange rush I am.

We’re alive. Joshua is alive. Michael is alive. The wolves who fought beside us are alive. I’ll hurt later.

Joshua glances at me. “You held back.”

I look at him. “We’re doing this now?”

“Yes.”

Michael looks between us. “Held back when?”

“The pack run.”

“Oh.” Michael turns his head toward me. His eyes narrow. “You held back during sparring too.”

“I was being polite.”

Joshua stops walking. I take another two steps before looking back.

“What?”

“Polite?”

I shrug, and Michael starts laughing.

Joshua points at me. “You took fifteen.”

“Apparently.”

“Apparently?”

One of the prisoners looks back at us.

“Eyes forward,” all three of us say.

The rogue immediately turns around.

Michael holds up a hand, and I slap mine against it. Joshua stares at us.
