“I had the lemon chicken and Kay had the cobb salad. Large portions, so we shared, but yeah, I’d give it a great review. What time are you guys getting on the trail tomorrow?”
Raj and Kayley seemed like a nice couple. It was easy to see that Raj was hyped about his ride the next day, and based on Weston’s expression, he was excited, too. I remember being excited about the possibility of a long ride back in the day.
“Hoping to get boing by six. Our support and gear drivers are staying in a motel in town, but they’ll be here by five, I hope.” I turned to West. “Let’s eat and then we can set up camp.”
West nodded and grinned at Raj and Kayley. “Nice to meet you. Maybe we’ll see you along the trail?”
The couple waved goodbye as they headed toward the cabins lining the large water park area of Bubu Bear’s Jellystone Campground. I hadn’t thought about checking whether there were cabins at our next camping stop. I made a mental note to look into it before bed because Alexis and Step could stay there with us and it would be less disruptive for our early morning starts.
Unfortunately, after eating and setting up camp, West went inside to shower, and my brain went in a direction that kept me from having coherent thoughts. The guy was hot and thinking of him soaping up his body and cleaning every crevasse and appendage had my dick uncontrollably filling.
When he opened the door and came out in a fog of spice-scented steam, I had to get out of there or I was going to jump the poor guy. After staring for an unusually long moment, I grabbed my towel, toiletry bag, and clean shorts before sliding on my flip flops and fleeing the scene before I did something stupid.
Where the fuck had my control gone?
Chapter Fifteen
Weston
“Is something wrong?” I stepped out of the miniscule bathroom in the camper, wishing I’d gone down to the communal showers instead of using that box they called a shower in the RV. The whole vehicle was now hot as fuck because of me.
Bridges stared at me for a hot minute as he stood in the tiny kitchen area. Without a word he grabbed a towel, his clothes, and a toiletry kit, glancing over his shoulder and shaking his head. He slid his feet into flip flops and walked out, slamming the camper door.
What was his deal?
I went into the bedroom at the back of the small RV and finished drying my hair with a hand towel. I’d forced myself to get a haircut at a chain salon during my lunch hour one day—and it really looked like I’d gone to a chain salon—but it was short, which was my goal.
As I was dressing, I noticed there was the queen-sized mattress on a platform in the bedroom, but the dining booth that should have doubled as a full-size bed wasn’t put together. The booth looked nothing like what I’d seen in Bridges’ RV.
Not being an avid camper myself had its drawbacks—not knowing how to set up the other bed properly for one—but hopefully, I was smart enough to figure it out. I tried to pull off the cushions as I’d seen Bridges do with his, but they were firmly attached. They weren’t budging at all.
I looked under the table to see it was firmly attached to the wall and the leg that supported the outside end didn’t fold under it to make a base. It was tightly screwed into the floor. The damn thing didn’t convert to a second bed. There was only one bed in the RV. Shit!
How the fuck could I sleep in the bed next to Bridges without accosting him? Would my subconscious have a mind of its own and lead me to do all the filthy things to that man that had circled my mind when I was awake since the day my father’s will had been read?
The door opened, and Bridges stepped inside with his towel wrapped around his neck and his dirty clothes and toiletry kit under his left arm. “It’s a bit of a hike to the showers but nobody was in there. Let me open the windows in here so it’s not too hot for sleeping.”
I nodded and opened the two near me while he went back to the bedroom and opened the large window across the back of the vehicle. Turning to him, I tilted my head toward the bed. “Only one.”
Bridges followed my gaze to the bed before whipping his head around to the table. “No. It sleeps four. The booth has to make into a bed.”
I chuckled at his stubborn attitude. “Be my guest to try it out, but I had no luck. Maybe they meant four people if they’re stacked two-by-two. I couldn’t get the cushions off it like we did in your RV.”
Like a typical, know-it-all man, Bridges tugged on the cushion as I’d done a few minutes earlier. Again, they didn’t budge.
He squatted down to look under the table and saw the same thing I’d seen—the solid base wasn’t going to fold down to make the base for a double bed. I stepped closer to where he knelt, my hands on my hips.
“Told ya.” I never got to gloat when it came to Bridges so I wasn’t going to miss my shot.
Bridges pulled his phone from the pocket of his shorts and scrolled for a minute before his free hand shuffled through his salt-and-pepper hair. “Shit. It’s a good thing I put the girls in a hotel. The RV I requested wasn’t available, so they substituted this one that sleeps two. I didn’t read the email. I just saw the reservation was confirmed. I can sleep on one of these couches.” He pointed to the tan couches, neither was more than seventeen inches deep. They were fine for sitting but not for sleeping.
“You can’t, and I can’t either. We’re adults. We can sleep in the same bed and not encroach on each other.” God, I hoped I could.
“You sure? I mean, I can sleep sitting in the booth. I’ve had worse accommodations, believe me.”
I rolled my eyes. “You’re riding with me, Bridges. You need a good night’s sleep, too. We’ll be fine.”
The two of us went outside to sit for a while because it was only eight o’clock in the evening and all we’d done that day was fly and ride in a car. The RV rental agency had included two camping chairs with a lantern that illuminated our campsite, and it was glorious. Someone approached our area, and I tensed. We knew nobody. Were they coming to kill us?
