“Everything good?” Mercer has followed me out.
“Fine.”
“That's why you’re glaring at your phone?”
I ignore him and head back toward the players’ room. I’m not leaving until I know everyone has a way home.
That doesn’t mean I have to stay any longer than necessary.
I grab my jacket, check that the guys who need rides have them, and order my own.
I never drive after drinking. No exceptions.
By the time my car is pulling up, Delaney’s icon is almost at the apartment.
I watch it move the last few blocks.
It stops.
A minute later, my phone vibrates.
Baby Becks: Made it in. Going to bed.
My chest finally loosens.
Me: Everything okay?
The dots appear.
Disappear.
Then appear again.
Baby Becks: Yeah. Just tired.
Me: You sure?
Nothing.
Then—
Baby Becks: Night, Bishop.
Bishop.
Not Ken.
“Go home to your girl, Captain.”
I glance over at Mercer.
“She isn’t my girl.”
“No?”
The apartment is dark when I get home.
I drop my keys onto the table by the door and stand there for a second, listening.
