His mouth twitches.

“Don’t you dare.” I take advantage of him being caught off guard and beat him to it, grabbing the little pink toy from the floor.

“I didn’t say anything.”

“You’re about to.”

I fumble to turn it off while his eyes stay glued to me. “Need some help with that.”

“I’m very capable of turning myself on– ugh. Turning it off myself.”

“I’m sure you are.” His voice drops.

I shove the vibrator back into the pouch, and fight with the broken zipper before giving up and folding the top over instead. When I straighten, Bishop isn’t laughing anymore. His gaze is on the pouch in my hand. Just for a second. But it’s enough.

Because suddenly I’m not thinking about the fact that Bishop knows I own a vibrator. I’m thinking about Bishop imagining me using it. My skin goes hot somewhere other than my face.

His eyes come back to mine. The room feels smaller.

Bishop drags a hand over the back of his neck and turns toward the book box.

“Huh.” His jaw flexes.

I stop. I know better. Don’t take the bait. Unfortunately, knowing better has never once prevented me from doing something stupid where Hayes Bishop is concerned.

“What does huh mean?”

Bishop leans one shoulder against the shelf, arms crossing over his chest. “Nothing.”

“Now who’s overusing nothing?”

“Just trying to figure something out.”

Every survival instinct I possess tells me to leave it alone. “I’m sure I don’t want to know.”

His eyes flick toward the books we just put away. “So is that what you’re doing when you disappear into your room to read alone?”

My mouth falls open. “Oh my God.”

“I’m just asking.” His grin breaks loose.

One second he’s amused. The next, his eyes lock onto mine, and there’s a heat in them that wasn’t there before.

I should be embarrassed. Instead, something reckless takes over.

“Who said I use it alone?” The words are out before I can stop them.

Bishop’s goes very still. Checkmate.

“What?”

I shrug like I didn’t hear the edge that just entered his voice. “You heard me.”

He pushes away from the shelf.

One step.

Then another.
